Car rolled in ice/slush/snow

Did it roll, or did it slide?

Mine slid down our drive in Sweden a few years back, even tho we had studded tyres. Mind you it was -20c or so, and covered in ice from top to bottom, but even so, came as a bit of a shock.

OP - If it was sliding (which must be the case as it was in P with the footbrake on as well), your problem has nothing to do with brakes and not much to do with summer vs winter tyres. You parked the car on a hill covered in ice FFS!!

What did you think was going to happen?

Physics, she's a cruel mistress. ;)

I can imagine. I was very shocked too!

I thought German engineering trumped physics, but obviously not :(

I think we should all continue to ridicule the OP for another 3-4 pages.

It's ok, I can take it :p

You think? I'm sure he's got the message by now...but if you insist.

HOW DARE YOU ASSUME MY GENDER? THIS IS 2017 FOR CHRIST'S SAKE.

Are you sure that will be enough?

You might be right, we can save our efforts to give out a 5 pager to a regular poster.

From your first post I had assumed your gender...but then, being 2017 I thought men could also be that erm, eh, ...

Yes I am 100% serious.

The car was in park and the foot brake was applied.

With regards to learning, that's what I am trying to do by asking for advice here :)

No harm in asking as that’s what the forum is here for mate.

Strange if the car is in park as this would effectively prevent the rear wheels turning, the ‘handbrake’ then should add another preventative to the wheels turning.

By the sounds of it the car slid rather than the wheels rolling. Not much you can do about that.

Winter tyres would help that said I don’t use them personally. :)

I was driving Mrs D's Vauxhall Omega years ago, and parked on a car park on a hill which had a very subtle incline where the car park met the foot path.

To be safe, I parked close to the wooden posts which separated the cars from pedestrians, and waited a minute or so to make sure the car wasn't moving, even though I really didn't expect it to.

When I came back 5 minutes later it was touching the posts! Heat from the car or naughty kids? I have no idea, but I glad I thought to park close to the post!

How 'P' works.
This is why I always use the parking brake. P holds the car with one tooth of the ring gear.

Blimey. That's not much if the car's on a fairly steep incline. Think I'll start using the footbrake. :thumb:

This afternoon, as I queued at traffic lights I watched a guy pull on to his drive Ina Ford Focus. He hopped out and the car started sliding towards his house. Luckily it he had parked quite a way from his house and it stopped sliding in time!

I’ve started to use it all the time, one less thing to worry about :)

Never used it on any on my last three Merc’s.

Use it on the missus a class as it’s a manual and I don’t have to over exert myself as it’s electric.
