Car suggestions please (other than mercedes)

Compare that with a £50,000 S Class or specced E Class which is coming in at £1000 a month and it shows how well they hold their value.

When I checked early last month S was available at £499+VAT on a 6+23 and around £550+VAT on a 3+35.

Nowhere near £1000.

Lowest Panamera I found was £749+VAT on a 3+35 and well over £800 on a 6+23.

But I am talking about owning them, buying them, not hiring them.

Mercedes sell the £61,000 S Class to themselves for around £42000 new, then buy them back again for £29000 two years later, hence why hire deals are so cheap.

Try buying a new S Class with a balloon for £480 a month.

Porsche don't tend to sell their products cheap, they are not in the numbers game, hence why contract hire deals are never that great.

But you don't have to ... at the moment leasing is making a mockery of the traditional outright or financed purchase in this sector on new and 1 - 2 year old cars unless you are prepared to keep the car for a very long time.

I looked at the Panamera as an option and at the end of the day whichever way I spun it the cost to own (or 'own') compared with an alternative was pricey - whether it be another coupe or a M3 or M5 or C63 or whatever.

You're preaching to the Pope mate. :D

I 100% agree with you, anyone who buys a car these days is metal in my book.

However, the only exception is when a car loose the standard 25% in year one with no manufacturer support and then doesn't loose much at all over the years you want to own it, then, and only then is it better to buy nearly new metal.

However, I would still find it hard to buy a car I love if something else I like nearly as much can be rented for half the money.

And that is the problem, when you consider the 640i and 640d were being offered for a smidge over £350 a month it made the Porsche seem very over priced.

That's the competition ...

OTOH as you say the brand carries a cachet.

I discarded the Panamera - but having actually considered it seriously - I decided I could live with the looks (it's not as bad as TG's averted/covered eyes make out) though the switchgear around the transmission shift is a bit irksome.
