Car Valuations

Oh, nearly forgot.
The estimated retail price for this car is:£16,550
The estimated trade value of this car is:£13,350
1 Previous Owner(s)

When I bought the car from MB Direct last October I paid what most valuation sites listed as trade in price for this car (£19K with a good px on previous car). So on paper the cars lost £5650 in less than 12 months, 'bovvered?' 'no' .

Autotrader is NOT trade price. Autotrader is how much someone would like for their car. Note that this does not mean that the cars are selling at those prices ;-)

Anyway, this thread is explicitly about trade values - how much your car is worth if you want to part exchange it.

I was specifically talking about the Auto Trader with the price bracket set to "lowest first". This is generally a good indication of trade value.

And anyway - all things are relative. It may also depend on the degree of margin (profit) in the new car and also if the dealer has several the same as your p/x already sitting on the forecourt.

Take for instance a dealer who gives you a price as part exchange, is not going to give a "best price" straight off the hoof. If you say your hunting around for the best deal etc etc, it could change the price you're offered.

Also, it may surprise many people to learn that some traders will offer pathetic money for your car as a trade in, but when faced with an identical car at auction bidding against other traders, they would readily pay a good chunk more.

On the subject of price being unaffected by extras, although the car would be more sellable, its not necessarily true is it?

If it were just phone pre-wire and headlamp wash maybe, but surely auto trans and leather are options that add value (as im sure MBs with manual and cloth are deemed a bit of a no no).

Just a note, mine has all the above.

Did not think it was that low so will have to keep it only 27300 miles so may last for a bit longer.

Sorry if this sounds impolite, but I always find it amusing how much people kick off when they are presented with the information of how much their fairly new car has lost in value. Almost like shock, and they feel personally singled out as if they are being 'done' or something.

Why are people so surprised by this - newish cars (under 10 years old, say), normally lose a good few grand a year when newer and still quite a chunk of their value every year as they get older. Options and extras are always nice to have but most will normally only make your overall financial loss greater come resale.

Trade value is not what cars sell for on Autotrader, that's the whole point on having a 'trade' price - it's to allow a profit for the trader, otherwise why would they bother buying cars for resale???

If you don't like to know how much your car has lost in value, don't check and don't sell it!

And don't buy newish cars if you don't like depreciation ;)

Point taken. It was still a shock though, hence, I still have it and will probably keep it for another 18 months!

That's what I said...some while ago..:D

Ok - before anyone else steams in with Autotrader is NOT trade price, let me say again, that generally, the LOWEST priced cars on there (for any given model and spec) are a good indication of trade value. I didn't say or imply that it is to be taken as trade value, but that it is a good guide, as the lowest priced cars are the ones that will sell quickest - and by that i mean that jo public are going head to head with traders as the trade scour the autotrader themselves..... and of course everyone knows traders need profit.

In case people aren't aware, I do speak from experience as i've traded cars for years myself and obviously im still heavily connected to "the trade". I have personally bought cars from private ads at the same money the trade buy at, on loads of occassions.

Thats what I said about the SL :)
Plans are now afoot for another pair of turbos - i'll just keep it an be damned :D - anyway if I sold it I would need a new forum name!

That would be an interesting project. Performance of a 500, weight of a 300..

Thats the plan, The M103 12v is good for just over 300hp with the kit, which I will modify for better management and breathing. A tweak to the compressor trims and slightly bigger rear housings should improve efficiency and deliver a tad more power.

IF I work it out correctly I should get better than 300 economy as well as a decent overtaking power band. Add to that the fact that 103 engines are cheap it does make some sense - though it still wont have 8 cylinders :(

Just put my details in, not worth anything. Ah well might as well keep it then!:bannana:
