Carl Benz windscreen etching

I have just purchased a very nice E350d, 66 plate RHD, which has an etching of Carl Benz's signature on the lower drivers side corner of the windscreen. Can anyone tell me why it is there and what does it mean for my vehicle? New member so still navigating the site. Hope you can help!
