Carrotchomper gets his hands on a new M-B!!

The new Vito's rear wheel drive...Unless I've been doing Donuts backards with mine... ;)

Your probably right, but in my experience Police Forces don't like giving the most powerful vehicles to the lowest qualifed drivers. Armed response units, task groups etc will no doubt use vehicles with the more powerful engines, plus the two forces that are based in our capital have far more money, manpower and resources?

The beat vehicles tend to have 'moderate' powered vehicles but the Vitoi is still a flying machine with a less powerful engine.

True that...All hail John and his stretch limo... :p

D'oh! Still goes alright though. There's only so much power one can put through the front wheels of a van! ;)

The 150hp one is also 2148cc...All of them are the same engines but just tuned etc to higher or lower power.

Unless it's the V6 diesel...

IIRC the higher tuned versions actually give better fuel economy!

I'm STILL waiting for my V6 - ordered on April 20th :(

Don't know if I'm going mad here. Our old 02 reg one certainly was FWD, sure this is the same?!

The 'new' Vito (639 chassis) is RWD. Better turning circle, and better traction when loaded / towing / climbing slopes.

There was a 4x4 version too, but it's mysteriously disappeared from the latest Vito range brochure

I thought the V6 diesels were the same - identical bar the state of tune (280/320) ?

I think he just meant that all Vito engines are basically the same, apart from the 3.0 V6 CDI (and actually there's a 3.7 petrol V6 too).

BTW the V6 CDI in the Vito is in a similar (but not identical) state of tune to the 280 CDI. The Vito gets 150 kw (204 bhp) at 3800 rpm; the 280 is 140 kw at 4000 rpm.

Mr 007...BTB hit the nail on the head :) ; it seems the Vito's V6 Derv unit is config'd for lower down torque for commercial applications...and yeah, the higher tuned ones DO have better economy, I can vouch for that.

The V6 Derv is quieter than all the CDI units...whereas the V6 petrol is noisier than the little 109CDI at cruising speed...doesn't really give a case for having a Petrol engine in the Vito unless you want an LPG Conversion.

It's not uncommon to share engines and tune them for their application - the 5.0 V8 in the ML is tuned differently than the SL for example.

What does seem to be a bit cheeky is that the V6 diesels are all the same engine bar tuning (280/300/320). What happened to 2.8L and 3.2L meaning anything?!

Of course this applies to many M-B petrol engines too.

You'd think so, but not the case!

The '280' engine gives 440 NM from 1400-2800 rpm; the V6 in the Vito is 440 NM from 1800-2400 rpm!

But the V6 Vito is only available as an automatic ... if there are manuals with the 280 that might explain the need for a flatter torque curve (less gearchanges)?

I think it may have to do with green politics.
I mean the S500 and GL500 are both 5.5v8 and is called the S550 in the US where big engines sell well.
In europe it is changed to S500. Why?

Could be, but the SLK200 only has a 1.8 :D

It does seem abit out of order doesn't it! Offering different states of tuing for people I guess...

Bill, I also noticed the torque curve...I gave up after that seeing as I'm at work, need my brain for other things. :D

Recycled Porker, I'd say it's to entice the US customers to go for the car as it 'shows' on the badge is has a bigger engine (I guess).

It didn't change - it's always been 500. The old 500s was 5.0L V8s - the new ones are 5.5 but then I suppose this confuses things with the 55 Kompressors. These are now phased out in favour of the 63 anyway which is actually a 6.2  .

in the US the new Gl is called GL550 while the S called is called S550,.
it is changed. 5.0V8 where called S500 or 500SEL in europe not 5.5 V8 and the 5.6 was clled the 560SEl.
not it is all confusing.

The current SL500, SL600 and SL55 are all 5.5 litres (well 5.461, 5.513 and 5.439!). And the SL65 is 6 litres!

so why not call it SL550 and the tuned one SL550 sport tuned whatever else,
then SL55 and SL60 ?

Yes - my point is that is has changed in the US and not in Europe.
