hi everybody

i have just booked in my w203 2002 for a diagnostic check on my comand dx system. i keep getting cd reading error for my sat nav disc, however it seems to right itself after a while. Same problem for audio cd's (originals). I have tried a cd cleaner but to no avail.

Will there be a charge from the stealership for this test?

If the stealership advises new comand required, would it be better to fit a cd changer ?

Would i have to buy a changer from the stealership or could i buy independently ?

Has any body else encountered this problem ?

Thanks in advance

As the car is > 3 years old, I'd be stunned if they didnt charge you :-(

If the stealership advises a new COMAND ignore him.

(a) They can be repaired
(b) It probably is dirt, they can be cleaned much better when apart with surgical spirit, a cotton bud and some lint free cloth.
(c) There are outfits that repair COMANDs for under £200 - I can't recommend any, but look on ebay - search for
(mb,merc*) (comand,command)

Theres a guide to taking out the CD mech on www.mercupgrades.com in the FAQ section- which anyone with an electronics background should be able to do ..
And, if you look at my retrofit comand document, in the C class section, theres a link to a site that tells you how to get COMAND in/out of the car.

Maybee also 'alfie' knows who to talk to (see www.comand.co.uk)

Cheers
Richard

COMAND (cd version) is made by Bosch (Blaupunkt !)

COMAND-APS (i.e dvd version) is made by Becker and Siemens depending on which car and whether USA or EU version. (EU = mostly Becker, except SL)

The TV tuner for COMAND (cd) is made by Becker. The CD changers for both seem to be made by Alpine.
. so at least Becker, Bosch and Alpine are used to working together :-)

Not a straight forward question to answer, but usually those that treat, or treat dealerships, as 'stealerships' get treated in the manner they deserve.

If you have owned the car from new and had it serviced at your local dealership, then there is a chance of having the problem fixed simply as a goodwill gesture, indeed they might do it even if you have recently purchased the car. (the odds are simply more in your favour if you are the original owner)

Good luck with the enquiry,
John

Thanks everyone

only had the car since October 2005 which i bought privately - apart from the comand problem i still can't help smiling as i get in behind the wheel. Mercedes man for life now, there really is no other car that feels quite like it!

Not sure i am up to dismantling the comand unit myself so i think i will be guided by the dealer.

Glojo, nice to see i'm not the only devonshire dumpling on here :D :D

I 'think' my CD changer may have a fault and would welcome any thoughts from you guys.

Just occasionally the player will skip a tiny fraction of a track, something like one tenth of a second, but entirely randomly - if I play the track again it won't happen, or will happen elsewhere. Only happens on the changer, not on the built-in Comand CD/DVD drive.

It's not skipping like when you get dirt, it seems like a reading error. The car is under warranty, but do any audiophiles out there have any suggestions before I approach the dealer?

This is a common fault. The dealer will undoubtedly charge you handsomely for the work. If you get no joy, suggest you try the remedy mentioned under FAQ on www.mercupgrades.com.

The car is under warranty, providing you are using geniune CD's I would be knocking on the dealers door. Don't meddle in case you make things worse.

Yes, they're 'proper' CDs. I wasn't thinking of fiddling with it, I was just trying to find the technical term for the fault, and whether anyone else had suffered the same.

I have a 2000 E320 with the 6 cd multichanger and it too has a problem. It occassionly stops then continues. At other times the cd display goes blank and the steering wheel controls will not work but the volume on the cd player itself works. Other times it will not find the CD player and I can only get radio.

Has your COMAND had the MY01 update loaded .. (assuming you have COMAND at all!)
