Just mulling over what to do with cars next year as I have decided the Volvo is definitely going a 1.6 diesel was never my thing :o It's been a great car though 60k in 2 years and never a murmur saved me a fortune so its time to spend that on a decent car so here is my line of thinking.

My employer from next year will pay a generous monthly allowance if I do not take the company car option. My daily commute is around 80 miles per day 90% motorway my average miles 30,000 / year, employer also pays HMRC rates for business mileage of which I will do < 2000 / year. So I am thinking of selling the Volvo taking the cash in lieu of company car (first year I can have as a lump sum) so with the proceeds from those + saving from the Volvo I'm thinking of doing what I used to and putting something exotic in the garage for weekends, maybe a Noble, Masser, Porsche or similar. (Will still be keeping the W208 though)

However doing this means I will need a daily hack for my commute to work, this car must be bullet proof, not bothered about age (but preferably not over 10 years old) as long as it can handle the mileage, I would need to keep it 3 years.

So what does the panel think would be a good car? Please consider all manufacturers if you would not just MB although I realise several MB's may fit the bill.

My requirements below.
  • Must be able to cover 30k year reliably (90k over 3 years)
  • Don't want to spend more than £4k
  • Must be an "Exec" or "Exec Sports"
  • Not Diesel
  • Must do at least 25mpg (Combined) my commute 90% Motorway
All advice and comments welcome (including if you think I am mad contemplating this) and bear in mind I have access to cheap servicing, tyres, repairs etc, so thats not really an issue :)

Cheers
Ian

S60 T5.....

Great car, S60 and all Volvo Petrol's are decent motors not sure how well they handle the miles though as my V70 T5 started falling apart at 125k wheel bearings, ball joints etc. Engine was bomb proof though but reliability may be an issue particularly when you look at the availability statistics of police traffic cars the T5 spends a lot of time off road being repaired

Great car but one of my requirements was not diesel. thanks though, S60 and all Volvo Petrol's are decent motors not sure how well they handle the miles though compared to the diesels.

You're too quick.... I have now amended!

Turbo Volvo would work well for you - I did 130k in mine on the original clutch despite the remap and my right foot. Averaged 24mpg driven hard, mate of mine averaged 33 in it sticking below 80 on the motorways.

My S60 is on 170k now and is agiing.. Suspension knocks etc. Still lovely to drive and very comfy.

Another vote for the S60 here! I had a T5 for three years and never had any trouble with it. Sometimes I wish I still had it - I'd have driven it to Russia and used it here! :)

Is keeping your current Volvo not an option ? You know it inside out ......

It could be but that would limit what I could spend on a weekend toy and TBH I have had enough of of diesel power ;) so I think it's time to go :thumb: + in 3 years time it would have 150k on it and not sure it could take that an it would also be worthless, It wont be an easy sell for a 2 & 1/2 year old car with over 60K on it anyway. Only redeeming feature for someone is £35 road tax and 60+mpg + full History with oil changes at half the recommended interval

how abt a w124, abt the £4K mark for a minter, bulletproof, and you might even make on it after 3 years !

Some odd choices... but poss worth a look

Audi A6 3.2
Passat w8 ? or the 3.2 v6 one what ever its called
Saab 9-5 Aero Hot estate (brother had one and does 60K miles a year)
BMW 5 series?
lexus is
Jag s type v8

will think of some others.

Brothers had a few Saabs and the lexus and does 60K miles a year and both were great, Lexus needed for nothing and the rarer is300 sportback could be an option?

I'd started to look at Lexus but mainly the GS 300 as there are examples of 500k miles on original engine with no work and 250k seems easily achieveable looking at whats for sale, will have alook a the IS now, cheers

Brother had the is200 and did over 120K miles with nothing go wrong, his was an Auto SE.

Nice inside and drove well.

Good car for plodding up and down motorway.

Some Jap imported ones have 3L turbo engines.. but doubt 25mpg :)

Alfa Romeo 166 3.2 V6
Ford Mondeo 3.0 V6
Mazda 6 2.3
Mercedes E320
Honda Legend
Saab 95 Aero
Skoda Octavia VRS

If it was me, I'd get a Saab 95 Aero. When you're looking to spend £4k few other exec type cars will be; as new, low mileage, well equipped, as fast or economical for the money.

For every £1 saved on the purchase and running cost of your daily hack will be a £1 more you can spend on the w/e sports car :)
