Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, but it seems there’s a different kind of love in the air this year, according to research carried out on behalf of Shell, the British motorists spend twice as much time maintaining their cars as they do their relationships!

Results from a poll of British drivers reveals nearly 5 million drivers (12.6% of the driving population)[1] spend up to 2 hours per week maintaining their cars but just over half of that number admit to spending the same amount of time maintaining their relationships with loved ones.

The research, commissioned to celebrate Shell’s special Valentines offer uncovered even more details about the special relationships Brits have with their cars:

•Nearly half of British male drivers value their cars above other personal possessions such as wedding rings and even family pets!
•One in 8 of us believe our car is not just a vehicle to get us from A to B – but it truly represents who we are as a person.
•14% of those polled said they had their first kiss in a car.
•One in 8 Brits confessed they have even given their car a pet name - top of the list of the most popular names are Trevor, Orla and Bettsi!
•One in nine women spend 1-2 hours a week maintaining their car.
Car lovers can make the most of their vehicle by treating their car to an extra special fill up at selected Shell service stations this Valentine’s Day, saving 5p off a litre of Shell V-Power Unleaded or Diesel!

Very handy, I'm running on fumes right now and 77 litres of this stuff will save me nearly £4. :)

Found this out the day after i put £105 of the stuff in the cls:(

Thanks for letting us know I'm going to fill up now :thumb:

I havent ever filled my car to the brim... dread to think what it would cost lol

Same here, £15 or so a time with me. Used VPower for the first time ever this evening. Also took the opportunity to replace my brake light bulb after 4 days (I know...) at Shell, is £3 for 2 bulbs bad?

I've always filled my cars to the brim and there are a couple of reasons for this.

1. I've always gone through a tank of juice in a week no matter what car I've had and £15 for example would not last me a day! Don't fancy visiting the pumps every day or every other day.

2. Fuel tends to go up in price rather than down, so it makes sense to buy it earlier rather than later and then when the prices go up you have the nice feeling that you paid slightly less for what's in the tank right now, it is rarely the other way around.

I have a friend that regularly drives a couple of miles beyond his local petrol station to the one that's always a penny less. Unless you full up each time (which he rarely does) that's surely false economy. Although I do have my favourite stations - mainly the ones covered by my loyalty cards, regardless of the price of their fuel

Our local Shell station has just closed & they are few & far between in this part of the world.

You should fill your car to the max every time, saves money on the cost of driving back and forth to petrol stations.

Mind you there's a fit bird at my local Shell garage so I put in £3 a time

:D
