Hello Guys,

I need some help,

I plugged in around 3 different programs Bosch etc etc ... and they can talk to the whole car except the Airbag system.

I removed it ... and checked if there was power going to the module and the power was there on the plug.

I removed the module and sent it to a company called airbags for sale. I had a diagnosis that my Airbag module processor is dead... cannot be communicated at all.

So now I need to find a spare module they told me a used one will do the job and they can reprogram it and reset it.

The question is where I tried the mercman ... but he was asking for part number. Now the bizzare thing is I gave him all the numbers listed on module, but then he sent a plain email that he cannot assist.

Does anyone know where can I find a used module. Even on the Russian website I cannot find a schematic for the airbag system...

These are the numbers from the box
0018202226
000300206100779
0285001215The car is a W215 CL500 Sept 2000 model.

At the moment it is in the bodyshop for further "corrosion" repairs by MB.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
V

Is this the control unit under the bonnet on the passenger side?

The first one from your list of numbers is the part number - they're preceeded with an 'A'. So....

A001 820 22 26

This was replaced by A002 820 38 26 which, I'm pretty certain is the one you want. If you're want to PM me your VIN, I can give you a definate answer or just phone Mercman back and give him A001 820 22 26.

.

Well Mercman came back to me even with the correct part code and said once more ... no can help :(
now I need to go around and try to find a spare part :( :(

Used module is not possible. It can not be reset.

The guys that diagnosed my old one say that it can be resetted.
It costs £95.00 incl VAT

But the thing is that it will cost me the same money to reprogramme a unit for my car! used or new.

I am annoyed with the whole thing...

a) It can not be reset

b) A used one may be blown also because it may come from a car in an accident.

c) Your life may depend on the airbags actually working

d) If A, B and C are not good reasons then you value your life at 95 pounds.

Hi Miro.

A brand new module costs £465.00 without programming.
Programming will be on top £95.00
We are not talking for peanuts I am afraid.

The car at the moment has no airbags anyway as the unit is burnt... totally out of the blue without even the slightest accident involved.

Plus there are many companies here in UK that do reset airbag module units. Why would they advertise that?

GreekCL , how did you actually find out that the module wasn't working ? did someone with a STAR diagnose it , or did you diagnose it yourself with a generic reader ?

Your first post seems to indicate that you have been reading the fault codes yourself ?

Have you taken it to someone with a proper MB specific system ( STAR ) to find out what is actually going on , because it sounds like someone is taking you for a ride.

Personally i wouldn't chance it with a secondhand module .... you'll regret it as your head makes contact with the steering wheel at high speed in an accident ....

Hi Howard, a friend who has a PC with diagnostics we tried 3 programs 1 was with Bosch, the other was Carsoft and the 3 I cannot recall. We managed to talk to the whole car except the airbag module. It would not be communicated by any programme under any circumastances.

Mind you it is not just an OBD reader, there were indepth diagnosis software.

I do not want to take the chance of hurting my self in an accident either ... hence I am trying to find a solution to sort it out. :)

The solution is to take it to someone with a proper STAR machine and get it looked at properly .... the only thing that can talk to a car as complicated as a CL is a proper STAR machine.

Miro mods many MB's for people and really knows his onions , you have no reason to doubt his info i can assure you.

If the module is toast , or someone fraudulently resets it for you and it doesn't work , you could die.

I would spend a little bit of cash and get it diagnosed properly if i were you.

Sorry guys my mistake I missed to say here that Mercedes plugged it in the STAR machine ages ago when the problem was intermitent about 9months ago (SRS light coming on for days and then going off for another couple of days).
MB plugged it in the STAR machine for £40 back then, and they came back to me saying that the Main Sensor (Airbag Module) needed to be replaced.
But what put me off totally with them was that then he continued, we will have to replace the module and then take it from there, it should fix the problem...

I assume they did not manage to contact it either. Eitherwise they would be certain of the problem.

This is when I took it to my friend to have it diagnosed as well, as I would not like under any circumstances to spend £700 on MB .... and having in mind that it might be fixed and it might not.

Now just to clear the air :)
I do not doubt Miro, I am more than greatful for Miro's opinion and advice as well as all the others in the forum.

I just had a moment of doubt as while I was looking for repairing the unit online I came across many advertising of resetting units.
Also down the line I did find that if it is anything else than resetting, it cannot be done.

Ah , i didn't realise that MB has put it on a STAR already .... ;)

Sorry totally slipped my mind, mind you it is something that happened before the 1st goodwill repair haha... we are talking something like July

It sounds to me that this Airbag module has been replaced once before under a goodwill arrangement. Then i must conclude that someone has connected a voltage to the power lines which govern this unit.

Even when it costs a little more souvlaki than you prefer, it still costs 1/2 what I pay in Australia and as cheap as life should be, it isnt that cheap if you lose it. Unless you plan to be buried in the car.

I would dismantle the broken unit and find out which lines have fried the board. Then i would take a wiring diagram and follow every single wire in the SRS system.

I suspect a foul installation of an aftermarket bluetooth system. For example it is putting a voltage on an airbag wire every time a call comes in. I hope I am wrong but that is what it sounds like to me.

you can forget the 95 pounds. You will need the interior removed.

The chip inside the airbag module carries with it the VIN of the car. The chip inside actually breaks once the coding is done. The only way it can be reset is if the chip is replaced and the system reloaded.

The steering column lock is the same. when you open one up you see things are actually burned out. This is to prevent recoding. It is designed that way.

Secondly, a used module can be from the wrong year model. This means all the wires are in the wrong place. This happened once with 2005 mercedes CLK to about 100 cars (one day of production). One of these cars was in an accident and the wrong aribag opened. The module was good, the wiring was good it was just a different year for each and they didnt match.

Thirdly, If the module is used, it may already blow after an accident. When they are used in an accident they no longer work.

When it comes to steering lock, ignition, engine and airbag the modules from Mercedes do not recycle unless you have all of the necessary information in programming to make it possible. Generally speaking ... that excludes 100% of workshops and about 99% of engineers.

If you are blowing modules for some reason then replacing it is a waste of time. There is something else going on.

Hello Miro,

Both of your messages carry loads of information which i will check as soon as the car comes backfrom the bodyshop.

By the way the good will repair was both time for corrosion, nothing to do with the airbag unit.

Indeed my friend checked the plugs that go to the airbag unit and the do bring voltage, therefore there was no problem with it self being powered, hence not able to be communicated.

Now the only modification I made to the car was the sound system the amps and the sub... but the problem was there prior to the sound system being installed :( so I cannot blame it for the problem.

Now the car I got it second hand and I am the second owner, when I got it the problem was not there... or maybe it was in the very first symptoms, SRS light coming on for 2-3hrs and then off for a few days and continue like that until it becomes light on for days and off for hours... kind of turned the other way around totally.

When the weather was cold here in London going to -C I did drive the car... and the SRS airbag light was not on. It would come on when the car warmed up... now how strange was that.

When the weather warmed up it was permantly on.

When we removed the Airbag module ... we opened it to see if any of the circuit is damaged inside, it was imaculate! I was surprised I was hoping to see a leak or a dirt or something.

Cheers
Vasilis
