Hi Guys

I am thinking of pulling the trigger on a CL500 c140 shape. I am curious to know what the typical mileage from a tank of fuel on an everyday mixed type of driving and on a long run. My current w124 (m104 e320) gives me around 20 mpg around town and nearer 30 mpg on longer runs and motorway.
Any past experiences would be great to hear and any specific faults to look for when shopping for a car would also be appreciated.

thanks

Paul

C/w140s will either have a standard 100l fuel tank, or a 90l tank if the car has either a ski hatch between the rear seats or a fridge in the same location.

Being a bigger, heavier car (Quite a lot heavier), and having a larger engine the around town mpg will be a disaster. 10-15 I reckon. On a long motorway run It'll not be much different than the c124 due to having a longer diff so the revs at 70-80 mph will be much lower. Larger engines take a lot longer to warm up, so short journeys really eat into mpg figures.

Borys has posted a few times re mpg figures for a w140 s500 that might be useful if you can find them.

re the buying advice, the old gem of the loom issue is always something to look for. The SLS will need to be checked. Other common faults are similar ot the w124, head light wash motors, window regulators, the bose amps can get crackly and a rebuilt one is around £200.

I've read a lot about wheel wobble at around 60mph but never experienced this in all the w140s I've driven. Might be worth checking on a test drive though.

There are a lot of gadgets compared to the w124, and some are quite expensive to fix to check everything is working. Rear headrest motors and rear blinds are common faults due to lack of use.

The m119 engine seems to be pretty hardy so as long as it's serviced properly shouldn't give much trouble.

Around a town W140's are not a good friend's :),specially 500's
200miles a week for 100£ - 18-19ltr dead for 60miles - town only
When I converted mine to lpg did cut the costs by half.
On the run very good, 28mpg easy to achive 12ltr for 60 miles at 80-90 mph

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated. I am guessing LPG conversion will be a couple of grand which could go towards the fuel bill and keep the car std. My Mileage is around 100 miles per week.

Mine was done for 750£,while on holi abroad
In UK very expensive to convert.
100 miles a week I wouldn't go for lpg

If fuel consumption is pertinent you should not buy a C140, 500 but you should buy one because they are fabulous.

I get close to 400miles on a tank full, say, 80 litres, so not bad really.

I was interested in knowing the difference to my w124 coupe. I think they are great cars and I look forward to owning one. Fuel isnt a massive concern with the mileage I do.
400 miles on a tank are impressive numbers.:thumb::thumb:

Hi Dash

My other car is an R-Class, which is a supermarket carpark nightmare :D:D

So I have had plenty of practice.
