UPDATE.

Over the weekend, I had a nasty surprise with some bad fuel which caused the car to misfire and shake awfully - during this, I managed to park up and at this point it sounded as if it was on less than 4 cylinders (firing). After turning it off, I tried to turn it on however, the car stayed turning over with no sign of wanting to start. Engine bay had a very strong of fuel (no leaks however) which lead me to believe the engine is just flooding with fuel. I decided to let it sit for a while then took a spark plug out and wow. The spark plugs were awful and despite having a service last year these were never changed! So I believe this was apart of the issue but anyway, fast forward, I took a couple more out to let the fuel evaporate and placed them back in. Had a friend come and help with a booster pack on the battery and after a couple cranks, it gave a sign of wanting to start.. fourth crank it started on about 4 cyclinders. I decided to drive it about 5 minutes down the road home in 2nd gear keeping the revs high to clear out the rubbish in the lines. Turned it off and on again, started on about 6/7 cylinders so continued revving it in N holding it at around 3k RPMs. Let it settle for a bit before turning off. Turning it on again for the final time, it’s on all 8 again! So morning after, I grab a bottle of injector cleaner and got a fuel tank of V power and aswell as this, I had bought a a whole set of spark plugs. I also forgot to mention that an engine light came on due to the misfiring so the day after we plugged it into my friends diagnostic to show misfire in 7 cylinders!!! As we began changing the spark plugs, we found that 3 of them on the rear were loose - madness! Anyway, after installing all 16, the car fired up perfectly with no engine light and the smoothest idle it’s ever given… I must say, it pulls a lot harder than before.
Back in the game!! Honestly, class looking motor, mate! 😎👌

Thank you, hearing the compliments make it all work feel like nothing!

I look forward to seeing your journey with your W215.

They actually replaced the pump with a brand new one - did an exchange with Mercedes for the old one which knocked off around £500 on the bill. Aswell as this, they replaced many washers, O rings and the labour to installs it. Year on, working fantastic. Still under warranty too!

I appreciate it greatly!
Yes it does help the enthusiasm when you get some positive feedback.

I have a similar scenario to yours, but hopefully will be curing it a little more cheaply...

I had not intended to post about mine here, as I already have threads going on a couple of other forums (I stumbled upon your thread after a CL500 google search). But I guess it would not hurt to add one here too and get peoples feedback. I'll start one up today.

Let me know if you’re after any spare piping for the ABC, I bought a full set on eBay last year for a bargain.

Yeah, sounds good man!

Hey guys,

Thought I’d put up an update as I’ve had a few more issues🤣🤣🤣 of course…..

The transmission is getting sloppy with getting it into Drive, reverse etc.. Did a full transmission service, got slightly better but all eyes are pointing to the valve body so will be buying one with a new electronic board.

And the one that puts puts fear into every Mercedes owner of this generation, ABC problem….

Turns out, the power steering return line has a slight split in it causing it to spray over the exhaust giving me the biggest scare as I suddenly got a cloud of smoke infront of me as I pulled into my drive. Quite a odd issue as the main suspension fluid bottle is at the correct level however, the steering pump bottle was nearly empty - I thought it being a tandem pump it would affect both levels?

Anyway, to my luck, I bought a whole set of ABC lines on eBay last year for a steal!! £120 for the LOT and I mean the lot. So I’m heading over to my friends garage today to have it fitted and hope it’s all good!

Scary stuff, thank goodness you had that spare set of lines!

Hope the CL is back healthy again soon!
I thought for a second this was bye bye CL…

The car should be back tomorrow! Getting some tie rods ends fitted too at the same time.

Will have the valve body fitted in the next week or so as I’m just waiting on those parts to come.

If you ever get the chance, would be lovely to see a full set of fresh pictures of the CL. I bet it looks stunning now.

Great write up and project !!!
It’s like DeJaVu for me as going through it all now, restoring my s55.
Great cars thou
Thank you!!

If you have a thread up I’ll go and check it out!

How’s your exhaust set up?
Do you still have back boxes?
From the manifold back, it’s completely custom so new pipe work, larger diameter, no secondary CATS, no resonators and just two mufflers on the end. And something a little unique, no cross flow. We did a test before and after to see if there was any difference in power response with doing this (as we always had the option to add in an X pipe). And to be honest, it felt even better with separate pipe work. Baring in mind, it did have a custom exhaust on previously however, I won’t mention names as it was a mess.

Anyway, with all of that combined and Immy from Torque Flow’s magic, it sound unreal. No drone at all too.

Tandem pump operating two separate systems.

That's stunning and sounds amazing! 😍

Thanks for posting, I hope I can make mine that nice one day!

Update**

Great news! The car has been fixed and the issue turned out to be the Steering pump return line! All been replaced, new fluid and a pressure test to make sure it’s running perfect.

Can happily say that all major parts of the ABC system have been replaced including the pump (from last year - with warranty!) meaning no mean headaches?!?

If anyone is around the West Midlands area, I would strongly recommend JK Auto Worxs in Shrewsbury - they’re friends of mine however their knowledge of cars is fantastic. They have an ex Mercedes’ specialist there along with others who have backgrounds in all cars. Two owners, one having a 900hp plus GTR and the other with an endless list of cars being Evos, Old hot hatch Peugeots and much more. For the fitting of the new pipe and providing new seals as-well as doing the tie rod ends, they charged me a sub £100 bill
