I called into the dealer tonight to pay a bill  but walked out having paid the original bill, and bit more.

  • MB valve caps - easy to fit, even for me!!
  • MBClub 'official' mod pedals - how to thread to help me
  • C55 AMG boot lip spoiler - scratching my head a bit!!
  • Keys to the first C63 AMG in the country
OK, I was pulling your leg about the keys!! :D

The spoiler comes painted and with sticky tape in place ready to fit straight to the car, but I'm guessing I need to clean the paintwork, and remove any wax or other residue first.

Any thoughts on the best way of preparing the bootlid ready to fit the spoiler?

i tend to clean paintwork with some petrol before attaching any adhesives...

i guess thinners would have the same effect?

Clean it very well with a good degreaser.

I was advised not to rely upon the sticky tape and add some sikaflex to make sure it doesnt come off. I followed the advice of the guy who sprayed mine up and did just that.

Phew. Just checked back on this thread in time - had petrol and thinners ready to go!! ;)

De-greaser? Same sort of stuff used to de-grease brake discs?

To be truthfull T cut does the job very well, and I have always used that,,if Tcut is ok for painting over , and it is, then thats fine for me

Use some white spirit....it gets rid of any grease on the paintwork.

There is always a risk in using spirits as certain spirits will only dissolve certain contamination within that group , and no one spirit will desolve every thing.

Bobby D: When you fit the spolier you may need to also adjust the spring tension for the boot on each side as the spolier will add additional weight when you use the auto boot release function for it to fully lift open. There are three slots on each side of the boot behind the carpet trim panels and you just slot the spring into one of the slots for the correct adjustment.

Thanks folks.

Good thought Flash - I'll bear it in mind - to be honest it's a bit fierce at the moment so it may lift it as-is.

No worries - last night I had rain water on my boot from the big down pour (boot is set to "fierce" opening as well) and upon first attemot the boot did not lift up but was ok afterwards when I manually raised it...:o

That's good advice. There was one solvent that would dissolve almost anything, and that was carbon tetrachloride. But I don't think it is easily available any more because of health risks.

Another one I used in my work was toluene. I think that is even more dangeous than carbon tetrachloride. But they were certainly effective!

To degrease the boot lid I would use T-Cut followed by methylated spirit or white spirit. The Sikaflex suggestion is a good one. The right grade of Sikaflex will never set, so the spoiler can still be removed.

If it were me I'd just dip a cloth into a used bowl of water used for washing the dishes and wipe it over the area. The washing up liquid detergents should shift any dirt, wax and protective layers from the paintwork.

I use petrol really for convenience as we have a petrol station on site!!

its never failed me yet...

Yes I find petrol brilliant ....especially for cleaning out the ashtrays......

BOOM !!!!!!!

Most Things will do that , I have just been out to my old workshop and I have around 30 liters of thiners and cellulose mixes ot there, I will give all of the MB paint to anyone who needs the original 123 silver and 124 two tone blues. that will ease things a bit
