hi all , this site was recomened to to me by mates on ukgser.com, hope any one can help, my 1999 clk 230 convertible has had a niggling problem lately which was left unattended, in the mornings when started the car will splutter and chug for the first few miles and after i drop the kids off to school, it will start properly and no more problem till the next morning, so I know i should have had a look but didnt, they dont fix emselves eh?
however today on return from the beach the problem resurfaced with a vengance and could not raise any power in the engine would not accelerate and sounded like it was missing..maybe it is, though it got home and only just as i live in a hilly area and the last hill was dreadful trying to get up.

then i thought maybe the kompressor is knackered!

does this sound like a typical kompressor failure? any ideas and if its the kompressor (as i have it booked in to coogans garage in castlecomer for friday) where can i get a second hand or new at a reasonable price as this would be an expensive fix i would imagine.

66 k no previous problems

any assistance will be appreciated

Sounds like it could be your Air flow meter more than anything else, kompressors are good for 150k miles minimum.

Hi,
It could be lot of things, MAF, plugs, leads, coils, but i seriously doubt it will be the kompressor, my guess would be ignition leads or plugs, when was it last serviced?

MAF would be my first port of call, Kompressors pretty bullet proof, failures are rare but sometimes there are issues with kompressor piping so also worth checking that.

A non working kompessor just makes the car really sluggish as the air gets dragged into the engine via a very tortuous route if the kompressor is not running

Mine did something similar for about 18 months but having been through a couple of unhelpful MB workshops it ended up at a place in Kirkham, near Preston where a pleasant, bearded gentleman fixed it by swapping the rubber boots under the coil packs! Cost only a few pounds too :) .

Basically if you drove it like you're driving miss Daisy then you're fine. Hit the gas a bit hard and it got into a misfire which it could never recover from except by restarting the engine. If that's your symptoms then it's probably the coil pack boots.

Thank you for replies , just with mechanic and before he put the diag equipment on he reckons it's the mad , now he says it's a 400 eurofix ... Ouch ! Sounds like a lot for a small piece of kit , can anyone tell me a reliable seller of used parts ? Many thanks again for your time

If you suspect the MAS then try unplugging it to see if the problem persists. If it does then it's not the MAS!

I know the MAS is considered a fairly weak item but I changed mine at 150k because the car was misfiring and it only made a marginal improvement so the original one has gone into my museum of parts I pointlessly replaced as a spare.

if it is the MAF, its a DIY 10min job, £70

a sincere thanks to all it was the MAF that was gone , second hand part fitted cost 200 euro!!
the mechanic said its list price new was 396 euro, so at least it wasnt that much, If I had utilised the collective knowledge here first could have saved a few bob and basked in the satisfaction of a diy job, a lesson learned.
great forum and thanks again.

no problem.

But i would change your mechanic, sounds like he was trying to take you for a ride!

in Ireland taking people for a ride is a national pastime , you are right of course!

clk 230 losing power

Hi I,m completely new tob this forun stuff so plaease be patient. I also have the exact same problem on my slk 230 kompressor. I changed the plugs and the misfiring issue appeared as previously the problem was "chugging" on start up. Where is this MAF valve situated and what does it stand for?

As you look into the engine bay, it's down on the right (nearside of the vehicle) immediately next to the radiator. Our is a '99 model so I'm not sure whether they changed the location over time. One end is held on with a large jubilee clip. The other end has a clip that hinges. You will also see a connector that you need to unplug. It's a 5 minute job to remove.

Thanx moosehead for the info, I will check it out on my return home as I am stuck out in the North sea for the next 12 days. I have read all this thread and I feel this is defo the problem with the wife's pride and joy. I am an old plugs and points era of mech

Thanxs also to BlackC55 however you are too far away for me to travel or else I would have been there

Chugging

Hello,

I'm new to this but found this thread.
I have had my clk220cdi 56 plate for a year now and the chugging has got worse.it is only the first 10 mins of when its cold start. Then it runs perfectly.
Air flow mass has been changed Komp reconditioned, serviced and 4 garages later no one knows the problem. All diagnostics came up ok in garages. I even started off at a merc garage. Left the car with the garages so they can see on driving rather than their machines.
Any help please?
