Hi all,

looking to do a oil service on my CDI 270 CLK 209 and wondered what's the best oil to ensure it runs smoothly?

mobil 1 0w40

was told by the dealer to use 5w40 as mine doesn't have a partic filter...does that make sense to you guys?

Not really.

If you do not have a DPF you need an oil that meets MB229.3 or MB 229.5.

That may, or may not be, a 5w 40 oil.

Take your pick

Mercedes Oil and Mercedes Engine Oil from Opie Oils

I use Mobil 1 Turbo diesel 0w 40 but that comes down to it being available at Costco

Castrol Edge 5/40w Fully synthetic, get 30% off from Euro Car Parts online by quoting discount code mbclub30.
I have just had a service done using this on my E270cdi and it runs much quieter on cold start.
It also meets 229.5 spec even though mine also doesn't have a dpf.

Thanks, I'm looking for an oil to hopefully make the 270 a little quieter..

Just a thought... is it permissible to use .31 or .51 oil on cars not equipped with DPF, or on petrols? My own research seems to suggest that while some oil manufacturers list their .x1 oils as suitable for petrol engines in general for example, I could not find anywhere where MB lists .x1 oil as approved for thier petrol engines.

Yes.

More generally, I think most people worry too much about oil - OK, if you're pushing the extended service intervals to the max then it's more important but many people change their oil far more than is necessary. In the back of the handbook of my car it lists the viscosities that can be used and in the UK you could use just about anything.

I also think the MB229.x approval is little more than a marketing thing - any quality oil would be more than adequate and some non-endorsed oils are very highly regarded.
