One of my cats went about six months ago. Just got around to sorting it out. Replaced the two front cats and had two stainless steel through pipes to replace the back cats. Exhaust owners says it is legal and will still sail through the MOT. Says that when cats were made compulsory initially, the targets were too stringent. Since then they have been made more lenient such that I could take the two back ones off and it would still pass the emissions test. Car feels great. Specialist says it should have a power increase of 10-15%, whatever, it is feels much better and the mpg has increased. Question I have is: what is the best way to acquaint my insurance co with my new found power? I feel that if I explain the situation they might not understand/become sceptical, and therefore wonder if if it is best to say that I have fitted a sports exhaust, (kinda true), and covers me if I have an accident. Any suggestions?
 
They don't typically care about the details, just that your car no longer has the standard exhaust system. My policy just says "modified exhaust".
 
It doesn't work that way. Elephant didn't change my premium at all (AMG back box, straight-through pipe in place of centre muffler).

But Direct Line wanted an extra £100 (after full no claims) plus £750 excess instead of £100 when I 'declared' that my car had 17" M-B alloys in place of the factory standard 16" ones. So they'd probably have had a fit with exhaust mods.
 
I am with Adrian Flux. I had checked on other sites and they were asking for 10%, but I will see what happens. Thanks.
 
Spoke to Adrian Flux, and told them that the exhaust was modified, only charged me a tenner! thanks for your comments

If it were me I'd tell them the factory exhaust fell apart and a non-OEM one has been fitted.

Plus 15% ! I don't believe a word of it. Anyone got any dyno graphs showing the loss from modern cats ?? My guess 2 to 3 % deleting rear cats on a stock system.
 
I'm interested in the emissions. Have you had it tested? If what you say is the case then I'd like to do the same to my SL60.

Also, who did it and how much:D

iirc when I took the cats off my 500SL the power increase was about 3%
 
Im with Adrian flux, they didnt seem to care what I have done to any of my cars, the £10 is to cover "admin" Grav has also decatted his E55, it sounds better and breathes better as the exhaust offers less resistance for the gases, I know he also did the cams and possible the inlet thus making the whole system breathe a bit better, there are many many cars running around with de-cats which pass MOT`s, with MB`s in particular they burn fuel so efficiently they you probably dont need them anyway, especially with the V6`s and V8`s on the later cars as they are twin spark, thus getting better flame propagation (didnt think I would ever use that word outside of uni!) and burning the fuel better!
 
Grav has also decatted his E55, it sounds better and breathes better as the exhaust offers less resistance for the gases, I know he also did the cams and possible the inlet thus making the whole system breathe a bit better,

Is it the case that cats are not compulsory, or is it in fact a question of emmisions? Reason I ask is that the MOT station was going to fail my 500SL at last test because the cats were missing. I had to prove the exact date of registration before he would pass it.
 
With a front and rear cat set up most MOT places would be hard pressed to notice if one set of cats had been removed as long as the car passed the MOT.
 
Now I'm confused.

As a question of fact, if a car passes the MOT emissions tests after removing the cat, is it still illegal to use it on the road?

And does anyone on this site own a decatted car that has actually passed the MOT emissions test after decatting?
