W204 c250 cgi facelift petrol 2011
Looking to purchase a 57 plate amg sport clk 1.8 coupe automatic is there anything i need to look out for when viewing the car

Any info on this car will be appreciated

Currently i have a 53 plate c180 coupe how does this compare to the clk

The engines do suffer from timing gear wear. They rattle on startup when stone cold when left overnight.

The 1.8 can be a bit weedy when pushed. I'd go for the diesel.

Unfortunately diesel is out of my budget
Currently i have a c180 coupe which is 143bhp i think, the clk is pushing 184 bhp

How does the clk compare with my current c180 in terms of drive and power

Not much different really. The diesel will cost you less that the Kompressor engine (271). It maybe financially better in the long run. The fuel economy can be not too great either.

Save and buy the diesel.

Here is the link for the car im considering

Mercedes-Benz CLK 1.8 CLK200 Kompressor Sport 2dr

What do you think?

My current c180 is 143 bhp i think the clk is 184 bhp in terms of fuel economy i get 400 miles from a full tank on the c180 coupe

That doesn't look bad - certainly worth a look.
AMG sports kit makes it look better and adds some nice to have extras - was also nearly £5k option when new.
No Comand - (looks like Audio 20) - so might also be worth checking if it has phone prep.
Tyres aren't cheap so make sure that there is plenty of rubber.
IMHO these are really nice cars - solid and well sorted, but take it for a drive as with the lowered suspension the ride can be a little harsh for some.

Take heed of what BlackC55 says - the M271 engine is known to chew timing gears, so a good history and listen is essential - do your homework on the M271 and be happy that you are aware of potential issues. Then make sure you do regular oil changes.
As BC55 says - fuel consumption isn't the best. My M112 320 did better. As it is a coupe, I would say the 270 diesel is the best option.

At £6.5k, if it all looks good, I think it is worth it. At £6k it would be a snip.

Cheers Ted, the audio 20 does it play mp3's if I wanted to upgrade the audio what would you recommend

what should I be listening out for? i'll ensure the seller doesn't warm the engine up before I pop down to view

what are the other potential issues

It looks a nice car, but you will have to go and see it to check the actual condition.

I would have preferred one with Parktronic parking sensors and Command satnav
18inch wheels and sports suspension may give a hard ride.

Check the windows open slightly when you open the doors and close again with the doors shut.
Check the seatbelt arms move out to greet you when you shut the doors with ignition switched on.
Check the rear LED brake light is not damaged around the edges.

Recently bought a 270 - 2003 with 74,000 miles for £4000 and it is an absolute delight in every respect - averages 600 miles on a tank.
With a budget of £6500 I would have thought you have plenty of room to get a really good diesel.

Not sure (read don't know) if it plays MP3s - the autochanger (which it hasn't got) certainly does - (burnt to CD - also displays tags).
There will be a 3.5mm socket in the glovebox - you can connect to that either by cable or by plug in bluetooth device (cheap and available on ebay). There are other better and more expensive retrofits available.
I have Comand, and that provides by far the best integration but is dated and expensive as a retrofit. Lots of people have done upgrades - have a search around the forum for details, but be aware that you may need star coding for being able to change the clock time and you may lose steering wheel controls. General consensus is to stay away from the Chinese lookalikes although at least one member has done this and is happy.
tec has given good advice on what to check. As he says, parktronic, Comand and possibly xenons are good to have, however rear park sensors are an easy fit and some nightbreaker unlimited bulbs will light the way nicely.

You will find that the orthopaedic seats are some of the most comfortable you have ever sat on.

Basically, I think that this is one of the best looking cars that Mercedes have done in recent year (even better in AMG sport spec, and by the facelift (which this one is) any quality issues had been sorted and, possible engine issues excepted they are a good solid reliable car.
I also have the M271 and find it smooth and plenty powerful for what I need - it is also a good motorway cruiser.

But then I'm biased.

Cheers

The car is in Solihull, intending to view the car on the weekend, any one on this form local to Solihull on this forum that could perhaps view the car with me, i'm based in coventry

Couldn't agree more its certainly caught my eye nice looking motor for the price

If I do purchase the car, can a xenon hid kit be fitted or if I manage to find some original xenons would these be plug and play

I don't know much about HID kit, but I think you need the lower power H7R type as the clk does not have projector headlights.
H7R 35w Slim Canbus Terminator HID Xenon Conversion kit - HIDS DIRECT LTD Store | HIDS Direct Ltd. for HID Xenon kits, Xenon bulbs, MTEC bulbs, LED's, Car Parts and Air Suspension

Original xenons or copies can be done but it's a big job as you have to take off the front bumper.

I recently fitted a Chinese unit to my pre-facelift interior 2004 CLK.
It works very well and the steering wheel controls work, and I had to fit an external handsfree mic as the built-in mic was too quiet.

Also I retro-fitted the digital climate control which I imported from the USA for £40.

looks impressive was it plug and play with no coding required

I note that the HIDS Direct listing for the H7R units that TEC quotes above has the statement 'This product is sold for 'off road' and 'show' purposes only'

There are many posts on this forum regarding aftermarket HID fitments and the doubts over their legality in the absence of suspension linked levelling and headlamp washing equipment. Fitting OEM equipment would be expensive and, I believe, also require STAR coding.

Personally, I find the CLK halogen reflectors to be quite efficient and with Osram Nightbreakers or Philips Extreme Vision upgrade bulbs to give very good illumination.

How about these they were recommended to me by someone who has a clk who had xenons and sold them and purchased the ones in the link instead and claims they are better than the xenons
