clk coupe purchase

Key is approximately £225. It should also have had a gearbox fluid change around 37,000. Many did not bother with it but it is important. The dealer should be able to confirm the service history. Some are more helpful than others

Cheers! £225 for a key

it is an auto box, for my piece of mind could I change the gearbox fluid myself is there any guide available

Should I be concerned of the the missing 37k service

I wouldn't be concerned but check what should be done on that service and see what has been done as it may have been covered in the other services. You just need a nice dealer who can check the on-line records for you :D

Can I obtain the service check sheets online, would they be available on this forum

The missing key is annoying, but I wouldn't walk away from the car purely for that reason - see if you can negotiate on that basis, with a quote from Mercedes for a replacement key with setup.

The dealer should give you most of the info on the car, however they may face some data protection restrictions although everything should be available for the current owner.

As for the gearbox fluid change, don't think it is a problem if it wasn't done as of yet, but factor in the cost of having it done yourself, as it is advisable to have it changed at the mileage specified earlier.

The mileage before the next service is set by the on board computer, think it varies on different engines and service types.

In regards to other things to look out for, I'm not familiar with this engine but on the car itself I'd advise to check the following:

- All of the seat controls are working (usually they're not due to carbon build up on the motor)

- The mirrors are closing and opening freely and not getting stuck (try opening and closing them a number of times at the button).

- Check that the fog lights aren't damaged, they tend to catch big stones and crack, a replacement isn't cheap and not easy to find.

- Check that the boot opens freely and springs to the top, easy fix if it doesn't, but it's another thing to look out for.

- Check for the usual signs of any damage, newly painted panels etc.

- If you do decide that it is the right car for you, make sure to HPI check it prior to making the commitment.

Best of luck with the viewing.

That's all that I can think of for now.

Thank you for the great advice, looking forward to the viewing and certainly will do a hpi check

The seller has advised one tyre will need replacing soon, apparently the tyres are expensive to replace

Called Merc wolverhampton they confirmed the SH but need authorisation from the lady who owned the vehicle before the current seller to check whether she is happy for the dealer to email me the invoices, awaiting call back...

Check tyre prices online.

Pretty sure it will be the following.

Front: 225/40/18
Rear: 255/35/18

Brands are obviously your call, weird to hear that one tyre is on the way out - will need to check the wheel alignment if the tyre wear is uneven. I'd swap tyres in pairs, front together & back together.

Check that tyres are currently in the same pairs, front and back.

mot info states 10 June 2015

Offside Rear Tyre worn close to the legal limit (4.1.E.1)

any ideas which brands/tyres are recommended for the clk

The expensive one's then 255/35/18.

Decent reviews seem to come from:

Top range: Michelin PS3, Continental SC5, Goodyear F1
Mid range: Uniroyal RS3 (apparently amazing in the wet) and Barum
Budget: Kumho

:thumb: unusual for just the one rear tyre that is on the legal limit, would have expected it to be the front

Not on a RWD....

The unusual part is the uneven tyre wear on one axle.

What should I look for to determine if there is an issue

Essentially uneven tyre wear, which would most probably be down to alignment issue.

Hopefully, it is just a simple case of four wheel alignment. The poor alignment could be a result for a number of reason, general road conditions which have thrown it out, worn suspension parts OR accident damage (don't get alarmed if there are no signs of repair).

When/if taking the car out for a test drive, see if it drives straight with the steering wheel straight, if it pulls to a side on a straight road, you should most definitely need wheel alignment. Also see if the steering wheel stays straight when you let it lose in drive.

Check suspension, for sounds/knocking, drive through a speed bump, this should show up any sounds if the suspension is worn.

at 47k I would like to hope and not expect any suspension knocking sounds
