Ok we have all heard loads of stories about amazing hard ball negotiations/ huge discounts when closing the deal on a new/used car.

I'm almost at the point of closing a deal on a second hand mx5 for £5k, no trade-in, no finance, straight buy etc etc etc.

Today i have managed to get a big fat zero, nil, nothing, not a penny, off the sticker price.

Anybody managed anything equally as pathetic?:wallbash:

There's a shortage of good clean used cars at the moment, so dealers can't/won't move much on price.

Dealers are strapped and have such low margins at the moment some just take the view if you are interested they wont give any discount.

Yeah.. Mercedes Colindale had a s320cdi or s350.. cant remember which i was discussing with all the trimmings...

was early this year..

Car was built and been sitting around for over 6 months.. list price was £70k or so...

literally every option you can think of - asked for a discount for a cash deal.. and they came back with some stupid number crunching exercise of less than 2%

seriously... i just walked out..

They were worried you were going to scrap it when the ashtray was full?

Yeah, I'm unsuccessful most times. It never stops me trying.

As Nick says, they have no need to discount at the moment because decent cars are selling well. The MX5 has always been a popular car and he'll probably have buyers lined up - ask for a free service, a valet or tank full of fuel etc as I suspect that's about all you'll get

For those of us who own cars the fact that is more difficult to 'get a deal' is to some extent very good news.
Knowing the right time to buy is major factor, and at the change of the reg. plate is not!
End of the month, or better still end of the quarter is the right time for a deal.:D
As an owner normally expecting to take a hit on residual values, I'm pleased to say that using Glass's guide, the equity in my cars has not reduced since last December.
Green shoots?:thumb:

Couple of mags i read ref cars sales/repair etc have said a few times now if a car/van is a decent motor it WILL sell at decent money.

Was reading something about bidders paying more than guide price to get the right car, this was dealers and not joe public.

Of course this will get worse as more cars go the scrappage route.

Dont forget you CAN always get cheaper but there is always a reason its cheaper!
