Im tinkering about buying a CLS 500 afterseeing one in a local garage the other week.

Ive always bought Merc diesels until last year when i bought a clk 280 sport which was great...no issues what so ever unlike my S320cdi where the turbo failed leaving all kinds of expensive mess!

My only real issue is the MPG of the car...i do about 20 miles per day all urban driving start stop to my office....so what should i likley expect?

based on this should i save a few £0000 buying the 500 or wait and get a diesel variant?

Either that or i'll bite the bullit and get a 335d m sport coupe, which is calling my name but i keep trying to convince myself im MB to the core!

A CLS500 stop start in town will be heavy on fuel. Expect about 10-14mpg.

Wait for a decent CLS 320 CDI as it will give you virtually the same power and speed, with more torque mid-range and also 40mpg on a run.

Town runs on the CLS 320 CDI will give you about 30+mpg, but 20 in the CLS 500.

In an S500 W220 I get 20mpg on my way to work usually which is mostly stop-start as I pass 3 schools 1 hospital, 1 town centre, and cross over a busy junction of the M25.

I went up to Stockwell (avoid) this week to pick a car up and even in 4-5pm London traffic it still according to the trip computer averaged 18.7mpg.

thats actually not too bad...i only get 19.7 in my 280 sport
