CLS320 cdi Buying advise, known issues, tips etc

As I have stated previously, I have had the crankshaft bearing replaced twice.

The last time was Oct 11, and since then, my MPG has increased, the best I had seen before, was 35.4, but on a run in December, I saw 37.7.

In my experience, it does effect economy, and probably performance.

Hi wobbly,

Did what were the symptoms when this happened. What age were the cars and how forked the bill and how much if you don't mind me asking. It would really help my decision. I really want this cls but not if there is a good chance it will cause issues.

Steve I'm not sure that is Hawk's point.

The bearing serves a purpose for sure, but it's contribution to the overall efficiency, from one design to another is minimal when compared to the driver's input.

If the car makes only a slight rattling why bother replace it if it's not detrimental the running of the car?

It must serve a purpose...

Yes it does. I think we are talking cross-purposes here, as I thought you were commenting on Hawk's comment regarding the effect's on fuel economy and not agreeing with it.

I've got a plan. As soon as I hear some sort of noise I'll buy some loft insulation and staple it to the under tray ans px it for a sl55 :bannana:

So what is it's purpose :p lol

The symptoms are a ticking noise, that sounds like a fire crackling at idle, it is intermittent.

The car, yes it has happened twice in the same car, with full MB history.

The car was just over four years old with 40k miles when the number 1 crankshaft bearing was replaced by MB Brooklands, I had to pay 25% for parts, totalled about £80, I believe the labour was about 13 hours.

Then 16 months latter, with 55k miles, the bearing started making the same noise. I was told it was replaced with a modified bearing, at no cost to me.

Wobbly, what were you told would happen if the bearing failed. No-one has answered the question, what happens if its never fixed?

Steve,Hawk answered the question on the other(cls problem)thread,(page 10),mb said no harm would be done!

Hey! let's all just let it rattle! :D

So why bother fixing it then. Thats it, if mine goes I'll let it rattle away then punt it on!!!

From a dealers point of view-customer complains, dealer agrees to fix under goodwill with a contribution from customer, their workshop then get 13 hours work out of the job which is submitted & reclaimed from mb?

I really would like to know if it's completely harmless to drive with this periodic rattle. If it is OK, I'm going to leave it. After all, there's probably more chance of future problems with an MB garage messing with the inside of the engine!!

For peace of mind i would let mb Oxford sort it(if they agree),come selling on time it might put off perspective buyers/be used to knock the price down.

Lollll so potentially the v6 engine can make a crackle noise like a fire. So far we have deduced that this doesn't affect performance, make the engine blow and may affect economy by 1mpg. No one knows what the bearings are for however in order to fix this issue it costs 2-2.5k lol

Lol I'm so chuffed with myself. This is the best thread I have started ever lol :bannana:

Never asked, and don't know, but if the bearing is making a noise, I would suspect, it's not doing its job correctly.

They fix it if the noise annoys a customer and that customer complains. Not because they think it will fail but because it causes annoyance. And not becuase it would have any effect on fuel economy.

Normally having a gap between the main bearings and the crank is a bad thing, and something that can only result in faliure.

seems we have conflicting thoughts....
