CLS320 cdi Buying advise, known issues, tips etc

I've never really understood goodwill,it makes you think mb are doing you a favour when in reality it seems they are really trying to brush known faults/issues under the table, after all,if mb were not liable or at fault they would surely make the customer pay?

Many manufacturers will do nothing if you get a problem out of warranty. But MB have always had a policy of making a contribution (at the least) under goodwill in the year after the guarantee runs out. And often for quite a while after that. Especially if the car has a full MB service history.

But, as my edit above, I guess it's not my worry really as my dealer have already said that any repair is covered by them. They are the ones hoping to get the cash back from MB! Seems they may have a job....

^Hold them at there word & let them worry about recovering the cost.....

Indeed!!! I think (hope) they're an honourable set up and twice they've assured me that whatever MB Oxford say, they will cover the cost, including the hire car if needed.

Whilst i understand mb's policy on goodwill it almost leads me to believe they're expecting a fair percentage of their cars to come back with issues that they will cover under goodwill(if their criteria is met)maybe i'm just suspicious but it makes me think.

As long as they are true to there word then fair play to them on there after sales service.

Hi Guys,

I have seen a cls320 cdi 2006 model with 31k on the clock, full amg pack 19" alloys, plenty options. im really happy with the car however im quite cautious being an MB I really want to check the car as much as possible. are their any known problems with this 320cdi engine and 7g gearbox.

Any advise would be much appriciated. i am also thinking of getting an audi a8 instead, i know this is like speaking of the devil on a MB forum but i basically want one that will be likely be the most reliable.

Also the cls320 cdi, I have been advised it does not have full MB dealer SH, its maybe part and usually done in their local garage. they seem genuine people, car is used at weekends only etc etc however as said any help at all and i would be really grateful.

thanks in advance guys, i really want to be an MB owner haha:bannana:
I've had a CLS 320cdi for a couple of months now and love it so far.

It's a 1 prev lady owner car with a full Merc main dealer history, spec'd up pretty well and in decent condition.

Love the car so far, not done any long journeys in it as of yet, have mostly been A and B road driving and typically doing low 30's to the gallon, on the short motorway run's I have done it's done over 35mpg avg no problem, that's going off the OBC.

Don't let horror stories put you off too much as they're few and far between. I've not had any reliability issues as of yet, hopefully it will stay that way aswell :)

I guess, realistically, there is a point that no manufacturer will continue to fix cars at their expense, no matter what the fault. But, at 50K miles and just after a HUGE service, you'd hope they would!

Good to hear & pleased for you, hope it continues for many more miles to come:)

I would be very happy if I could report something like that in 6 months! :)

As i said in the "other" thread, I'll leave it be now and see what happens at the diagnostic later this week. I'll let you all know how it goes! :) Wish me luck guys!

What about the airmatic?, am I right in thinking it can be troublesome or does not effect the cls?

it's their problem, not yours :)

if I was MB, there is no reason on earth why I would help the Renault garage .. there is no good reason to

Can't tell whether this is genuine or sarcastic.

Either way, I hope it does aswell :) Thought i'd just reply in quote to the OP to show that not every CLS320cdi goes bang as soon as you buy it.

Genuine(hence the smiley face & not the:rolleyes:).

id rather my bubble burst than my wallet empty :) thanks for the insight, its v helpful

ive had an update called a few merc specialists including PCS guys and they say it doesnt seem to affect the performance, economy etc of the car its just the noise is there and they havnt seen enough to warrent that it is a massive concern so what does this part of the engine do lol

does anyone hae a copy of the noise file, they seem to have disappeared when someone has uploaded it

As I have stated previously, I have had the crankshaft bearing replaced twice.

The last time was Oct 11, and since then, my MPG has increased, the best I had seen before, was 35.4, but on a run in December, I saw 37.7.

In my experience, it does effect economy, and probably performance.

In every car I've owned, the economy has varied a great deal more than that from trip to trip just with variations in weather, traffic, my mood (more or less agressive etc) etc.

True but if the bearing isn't really needed why is it there?

Steve I'm not sure that is Hawk's point.

The bearing serves a purpose for sure, but it's contribution to the overall efficiency, from one design to another is minimal when compared to the driver's input.
