I changed my W202 clutch after 60K miles because I felt it slipped and I didn't want to damage the gear box. That was in 2003 and I spent £250 for the clutch and additional £200 for labour. My SLK200 has done 50K miles. I don't to make the mistake to change the clutch too early when there is still life in it. What the recommended mileage should I change the clutch?:(

This is driver dependent and not mileage, if the clutch starts to slip then its worn out,, if it will not disengage making a clonk when engaging a gear it the thrust bearing, or Hydraulics.

I think that you wait and see,,, you normally get a warning of one of the above with out a panic

Will a slipped clutch damage the gearbox. When the rev counter flies up and the car does not move, then it is time to look at the clutch

No, unless it starts to drag, which is a slightly different issue, though it may be connected . A dragging clutch will load syncromesh clutches unnecessarily.

You will know long before a clutch needs attention, and to be honest I would expect high miles before you need to change one. I got 300,000 miles out of a 4x4 clutch, but it is down to driving "style"

When I used to have manual cars the local indy clutch shop had a simple test to see if one needed changing. At rest he would put the car in top gear and try to drive away. If it stalled the clutch was OK, otherwise the car would sit there with fifth gear engaged, engine revving but not going anywhere.

Pretty convincing.
