CLK 200 Kompressor
Hi All,

I wonder if anyone could offer some advice. I have a CLK 200 Kompressor (1800 engine size, 2002 model) I do apologise, but I have no idea what the W number is that you experts seem to use.

If you look at the video link, you can see the rev counter, and hear the engine. At this point, the accelerator makes no difference. The error message does say ESP fault, but I thought that was connected to braking not engine running..... although I could be mistaken.

However, if I tap the top of the Throttle Body, it usually cures the problem (coincidence, possibly) but I thought this was the issue. So, today, I have removed the throttle body and cleaned the butterfly and the housing with carb cleaner. I carefully removed the cover over the electronics and cleaned the fingers and the resistance tracks with contact cleaner and lubricant...... I turned the key, and yes; the problem remained. The problem is getting worse with time, and also the cruise control/speed limiter also now becomes inoperable..... it is getting worse over time.

I replaced the MAS only a couple of hundred miles ago, as a local garage said that was the fault code that was showing. Still no difference.

Does anyone have any thoughts on why my car is behaving like this?

Diagnostic is the best route mate.

Hi Simzy,

Thank you for your quick response. I did have my car plugged in and diagnosed by the RAC and it was them that told me it was the MAS. I got a replacement from Dronsfields but it made absolutely no difference.

The ESP problem that shows up when the car will not start properly does not show up on the diagnostic unit that RAC plugged in during the displaying of the fault.

But is there a difference between the diagnostic unit that a merc or independent merc garage would use and that used by RAC?

Star is mercedes specific, can't really do anything until you have had it plugged in. ESP is electronic stability program which could mean any number of faults, just take it to a garage with good diagnostic equipment and go from there.

The error message does say ESP fault.

Phil, turn the engine on and move the steering wheel from lock to lock 3 times. Drive away and see if the ESP fault disappears from your dash readout.

Did your garage or the RAC clear the code? If not, then despite replacing the MAS, the stored code is still present.

I would find a Merc indy who has STAR who can properly read your codes and fix your fault.

Hi AMGeed,

yes they did clear the code and it was fine for about 10 mins, then it came back.

The code was cleared after the MAS was replaced, but again the fault returned after about 10mins again.

I have read about the ESP error is related to a sensor in the wheel.... but the movement of the wheel makes no difference......

And sent from you Commodore 64 :bannana:nice one:D I used to have a VIC20 many years ago. Ah life was so much simpler with Commodore basic and pinto engines with points and distributors ;)

Video now set to unlisted..... I just did not want it to be too public :)

Hope you can see it now ;)
