Comand - live with what you have?

I can't even get a command unit for my W163 to see if I like it???

When it is capable of things like speed camera warnings, then I might be interested. But not as a £2000 option.

I have two of those warning devices- called eyes. ;)

I've never been nabbed by a speed camera - but was tagged about 8 years ago by a hand-held laser device.

Which doesn't seem too bad for 350k+ miles of reasonably recent driving. I fully expect to get caught tonight on the way down to seeing the Aged Ps...

Unfortunately my eyes cannot see around bends on the road or behind road signs. Neither can they see cameras pointing out of wheelie bins at the side of the road, as used in the Netherlands and no doubt over here in the future. :dk:

I changed from a tomtom to COMAND when I retrofitted it to my CLK for 500 sobs.

I would certainly consider buying a new MB without but only if it was possible to retrofit - otherwise it would have to be in.

You will be fine if the new car is post April 2008. Suddenly MB woke up then and all satnavs from then have the HDD system with full postcode and house number. But not cameras, i believe...

This has been discussed before, at least my opinion is firm about speed camera warning being against MB's safety policy and the question is not if they were able to do that. They might come with personal POI which owners could "misuse".

You only have to see up to the instrument cluster plus a few road signs to avoid speed tickets.

Sorry if that was rude, I know what you are after and I don't mind if people use speed camera warning devices (I sometimes do that myself, those are now included for free on Nokia Maps 3.0 that I run on my cell phone) as long as they don't expect MB should support those.

Neither can I, but I still haven't been caught by one - and that includes extensive mileage in NL, F, D, I, etc, etc.

I'm not knocking anyone, but can't see why people see warning systems as a necessity.

They do say that pride comes before a fall!

I thank everyone for their input here especially amwebby who appears to have gone through the same curve as me. Next question is - what do you think a "reasonable" cost for each of the upgrades would set me back?

Well , for the latest disc version so you can input post codes will cost you approx £0.00p. SEARCH and thee shall find.:D

I have just spent out on the later CD for the SatNav - went to Comand Online as per recommendations.

Ironically the thing that swayed me was people discussing the integration with the dash display etc, I did want to give the MB a fair crack of the whip (and I do have Tom Tom already if all else fails).

In terms of TV and Telephone I think TV I can't justify (no rear seats or kids to occupy) and for Telephone I am still not convinced that the integration will be better than my simple over ear bluetooth headset that works fine with my phones. Especially when the cost to get it added is nudging £700+ from the couple of quotes I have received.

Linguatronic I am still interested in though... I did hear that some people found that they were a bit flaky sometimes in recognition. Anyone got this installed in theirs?

Regardless of MB's safety policy, COMAND cannot be connected to the internet & download the latest camera positions or update to the latest maps, or any other group of POI's. This is where it falls short of other systems on the market today.

Until it is offered with this facility, it will always be sub standard in my opinion.

The very latest Comand systems due out soon are fully internet capable. In fact they will interact with the internet whilst driving!

If they can then download the latest maps etc, then that is a giant leap forward.
All depends on the price though, map sharing updates on TomTom is free and complete sets of new maps are only £30 or so.
Am I being cynical if I think Mercedes will charge a fortune if COMAND has the same capability?

I think it's if you got it,use it.If you haven't,you got to splash the cash:D
"Buttons without function..." yeah,I know what you mean:(
Always keep tom close to hand:thumb:
