Please can anyone possibly lend me a copy of this disc?

I want to get ETA displayed (I understand that there may be other features or bug-fixes included with this software upgrade, but it's ETA that I really want.

I would be quite happy to pay all postage costs plus a nominal 'hire fee'.

My local dealer says that he cannot sell me this disc.

I live in the Notts area, if someone local has the disc & would be prepared to let me come to their house at a suitable time, then that would be be great....

Thanks in hopeful anticipation!

Only a tenner from Mercedes-Benz Parts, Inchcape and in stock...

I have a copy but not worth the double postage and hassle when they're so cheap.

Also, my Comand formware was reverted "to the latest level for your car" during a phone reception problem by the local dealer so you may end up needing the disk more than once!

If you are into such things, its also known as SW-Rel 21.090 SW 30/06 and has been added to "certain sites" by thieves for download in ISO format...

Mmmmm, well, where as I don't exactly condone pirate videos, upgrade software like this - in my opinon - ought to be FOC from your dealer anyway - or readily available in the public domain. I'll try Inchcape, they may be more cooperative than Chesterfield mercedes (local dealer). Failing that I'l take a peek on one of those torrent sites.

Merc take the view (for the E Class) that this software level (including the ETA function) "came with" the June 06 facelift cars and so the software is not indicated on Star as applicable to the older models as a service upgrade. I have no idea re the CLK.

At the end of the day the software is Merc property so they can sell it (or not) as they see fit. The online parts site I linked sells it without issue - just buy online and it comes as a CD in a jewel case with instructions packed in a jiffy bag.

Is it really worth hassling over £10? I like and use the added function and thought it good value at £10.

Will this cd update the c class w203 software?I have gone from version 4 straight to version 10 but it isn't working properly.

Got the disc from Inchcape - but when I try and use it I get the message 'wrong variant'........

Any suggestions anyone?

Well, there's a thing.

I have tried the same thing, and lo and behold I get the same error message. I put in the disc, and it prompts to update from 53/2005 to 46/2006 or something similar, so press <yes> and it then immediately goes to the error message.

So this is a waste of time/money then, or is there something we're both seemingly missing?

I'd like to do the update to my S211 so if you do figure out which upgrade is correct please let me know.

BTW isn't the part number quoted above for the COMAND in an E Class?
Paul, is your SLk COMAND the same as the E Class system?

How do we know which systems the above part number is actually for? Corned, do you know whether it's MEANT to work for your system or are we just going by trial and error?

Mines the DVD based COMAND APS (where disc goes in the boot). I think it's the NTG 1 version.

Maybe the part number at the top of this thread is for later versions? (eg. NTG 2 etc?)

The R171 SLK (current series) comand APS is physically 'slightly' different to the E-class model, however to the best of my knowledge the units are functionally identical, the slk model has round buttons etc and a slightly tapered shape that fits it into the SLK console. It still has the boot mounted nav drive, DVD nav disc, etc.
I retrofitted the comand (using a kit of parts from comand.com), it came from a wrecked slk the same age as mine (late 2004). At the same time I installed a TOOKI bluetooth phone module and a dension 500 ipod interface.

Some people on this site think that upgrades to comand etc should be left to the experts. Thats fine - I respect their opinion. I personally like to experiment and play. I never have any hesitation or worry about entering programming modes, engineering modes etc - you can learn a lot from the internet and I have never experienced any problems that I couldn't get out of. I have tried pretty much everything to get this update software to load - changing variant coding etc - but without sucsess. I'm really scratching my head wondering why the system won't upgrade, it's no a big deal (I only wanted nav ETA) but I would like to have the 'latest' firmware installed.

If anyone who is more familiar with comand can offer any ideas (I'm thinking Richard or Dan here) then I would be very grateful!

Hopefully,
Paul G

Well, I'm sorted at least!

I bought W211589142200 by mistake and it didn't work, as previously stated. The devil is in the detail. Tried W211589132200 instead and bingo! - nice updated COMAND with ETA on the 'front' screen. :bannana:

Paul - may I suggest that your COMAND is subtly (yet sufficiently) different to the W211 version. You may require the '14' version, as the '13' version is evidently not working for you. We should swap!

Mr Shr - as you also appear to have a similar age S211 to mine, I would recommend version '13'!

Looking at the contents of the CD (the 13 one....) it has a three "xxxx.crc" files that hold version strings - both say ECE W211 - I guess that's why it might not load on an R171 as presumably that has the variant set to R171_ECE?

Might well be a different CD part number needed?

(the "14" level seems to be being dicussed on the American forums - maybe its for the W211_US variant?)

Actually there is some web chat about equiv update CDs for the 171.

They seem to indicate:

171 589 04 22 00 (ETA etc for US)
171 589 03 22 00 (ETA etc for ECE)

Not listed on Inchape - worth a dealer call??

Confrmed, you need:

EU SLK HeadUnit W171 589 03 22 00 18 Jan 2007SW-Rel 21.090 30/06

to get ETA..

OK thanks.
Some questions though:
1) Do you know if it will work with any version of map discs or do you have to have the latest map discs for it to be effective?
(I don't think my nav disc is the very latest available for my car)

2) Where to you insert the disc? (Polite answers only please!!) I mean, does it go in the boot drive, the DVD drive in the centre console, or the CD changer?)

3) What's the procedure for installing the upgrade? i.e. do you need any specialist equipment or do you just stick the disc in and follow on screen instructions?

4) If I do go ahead an do this, could it cause any problems to other functions of COMAND? And if so, can you revert back to how it was before disc was inserted? (Just conscience of the chap in Malaysia who recently had troubles since tinkering with his firmware).

Thanks,
shr.

It works at least back to map DVD 5.1 - that's what I had when I first updated the firmware.

It goes in the Comand slot in the dash

You press 1 and 3 and 8 until you see the update screen then stick the CD in. Takes about 4 mins and restarts itself at the end.

No issues to other Comand functions to my knowledge.

(there is an update for the navi unit as well but Merc seem to do this FOC at service time).

Just been having a quick look over on the US forum. Seems that before this upgrade is done, you can enter engineering mode, but after the upgrade you can't.

So should I go into engineering mode now and enable mp3 play before installing the upgraded firmware? (If I do, I wont enable video in motion, as I don't agree with it)

You can still get to engineering mode afterwards (via a different set of key presses).

However, nobody seems to have admitted to finding the key access sequence (if it exists) to get to the hidden menu where "backdoor" etc are (i.e. the middle soft keys on the right).

Best to make all the changes you want first..

OK thanks.
