Thanks for all prev info ref comand for my M class. I have another cunning plan, being thwarted by MB!

I am thinking of fitting an eclass comand unit into my pre comand pre facelift 1999 W210 E55. This console has only a single din space for the existing MB travel pilot satnav. But there is room I believe to fit a facia panel & rear housing from a later E class. Do you know if this is the case and if so how do I get the part numbers as MB can only tell me what parts there are for my own vehicle. I could do with a chassis number from a comand fitted facelift e class pre 2002.

any ideas ??
thanks

As far as i know, the dash and heater control surround wood is different.

I have brand new facelift heater control woods if you are interested in one, but a dash will be a difficult job if this is the case...

(this is what i have been told by people who have done it, i dont know this for a personal fact.)

Do you have a pic of the heater suround wood ?? or better still the whole front dash arrangement? when you say it is different, how so? Is the console physically larger? I was rather hoping that the only difference was the single din radio slot being enlarged to double din &amp; so losing the exisitng flip up cubby hole above the ash tray. then I could hopefully order a comand ready facia panel.

please take some pics if you can, and try measuring a facelift dash at your stealership (if they won't go for it, I will try at mine) the w210 is only available new as a touring/estate, but they will prolly have some second hand ones too. &nbsp; The bit that goes behind the dash is about £5, so that's no problem if you have to buy one, I nearly put one behind my dash but it's just too wide to fit in the w202, if we cut the ends off to make it fit, it would lose it's rigidity <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('> .

worst case you will end up having something like this:

comand10.jpg

then you have to make something like this to go under it:

comand11.jpg

when it's finished, if you didn't know it was there you'd never see the join, esp if it's wood (the silly faux-carbonfibre interior trim is tricky to match up) .

If you speak to Ian/Andy/Dave in servicing or Mike/Graham from parts then tell them you know Nick Brough with the green c230k, I'm sure they will remember me as I harrass them daily with questions etc ;)

In fact, let me know what time you intend to go to Whitefield and I might join you, it's about 10 mins from my house :D

email [email protected] tell him you are interested in a command and send him a link to this thread, he will get you one for the best price!

thanks koolvin

Shude,
I just spoke to graham &amp; also the service forman (southern sounding chap) about whether my &nbsp;W210 has a can-bus or not. They dont really know but will try to find out from the chassis number. I checked the pandora.be site and they say to make sure you get a comand unit with can-bus if your car has a can-bus, and without if no can-bus on the car. I'm a bit mixed up, because I am told the car is full of can wires for the engine management system etc. so is there a special can-bus just for comand?

I will be at whitefield about 9.30am tomorrow - see you there!

see you at 9:30am then I suppose <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'> . &nbsp;I'll be the one in the dark green w202 c-class with amg styling pack, rumbling amg exhaust, avantgarde grill, amg wheels and power folding/indicating w210 e-class door mirrors <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>

I was speaking to Graham earlier today about some narrow steel wheels and tyres I might be getting for winter/snow use, on the grounds that 193bhp + fat, low profile tyres + snow = much scariness.

Ha!

tell me about it

I live on a road that has a very slight incline and for the past 2 winters I have struggled in the snow. Small front wheel drive cars wizz by merrily on their way (sniggering no doubt at me slipping & sliding) my SL 320 wasnt much better hence the SL went last month and in came the ML.

Let me know how you get on

umm, nope. I will get up at 8am, wash my wheels and exhaust at 8:30, take the car to my local shell garage at 9am and jetwash a weeks worth of dirt off it then be at Whitefield at 9:30am.

Then again I could forget to set my alarm and wake up at noon-ish ;)

W210 Dash

I was hoping to include a pic of my dash but cant figure out how to???

If the pic is on my hard drive, what address do I use for the pic, ??

There are some instructions floating about this place somewhere.

You need to upload (FTP) your file to some webspace, then use the address of the picture to post it here.

This may help

nice to meet you too :)

Comand was about £700 all-in, including the dash parts, the antenna, a few cables and connectors etc. I have the bill in a box of stuff I brought back from NL, if you want I can break those prices down to exact figures...

Mercedes dealership people normally don't know much more then the basics they need to know for changing brakepads and filters... ;) .

Your pre modelupdated W210 should have a NON CANBUS comand (210 820 48 89) which is what was installed back then from factory in the 210s that came with comand...BUT every 163 comand unit will function as well (the 163 comands are all non canbus) and the older 208 units are also compateable (don't have a partnumber present in my mind).

What most people don't know (MB certified or not), is that you can use a CANBUS comand as well...but then you have to add and change a bit more. You can use a newstyle dashlcluster (with the bigger LCD display) and newstyle steering wheel with multifunctional steering wheel...after adding some wires THIS WILL ALL FUNCTION...I installed a canbus comand with similar setup (dashcluster and steering wheel upgrade) in a 1999 C43 last week.

The 210 needs a 2DIN reinforcement indash part (which is a pain to install) and new wood panel (200-250euro at the MB dealership) with 2DIN opening for you rcomand.

It can be done without a problem (the last W210 comand install took me 4 hours).

greetingz,
