Ollie and anybody else care to comment ?
I'm considering a 1990 300CE on a G plate to replace current W203 C240.
I can live with a slightly worse mpg and don't mind having an older car that looks good.

300CE looks good, what should I look out for ?

Rust rust and rust.

Do a search. There is loads of info on this site.

the 300's are a bit gutless and need winding up. Personally I would look at a later 320 (though make sure its had the wiring loom changed or budget accordingly).

Although many will tell you the 4 speed box is more reliable the 5 speed box is more relaxed on a run.

I've owned my 88 300CE for 11 years now (I think), and last year it failed the mot on a bit of rust on the chassis, and corrosion on the brake pipes, which required the rear axle being dropped to replace. Other than that, it has only failed two previous mots in my ownership, both times being corrosion of the rear (genuine MB) exhaust sections. Straight through this year though, with no advisories, as a good rust repair was carried out last year.

Other than routine servicing, I can't think of anything extraordinary that has been done to the car. I replaced the distributor cap, rotor arm and ht leads a couple of years ago, and that's about it. Head gasket is just starting to weep a bit of oil at the nearside rear of the engine, which I believe is common, but at 144k miles, I can't complain. Garaged until three years ago, it now stays in the elements, sometimes unused for a month or two at a time, but starts on the button always. It doesn't have a pedestrian performance, but perhaps does need a bit of winding up by comparison to the later 104 engine, that's if you want to be thrashing a 19 year old engine. Even so, it was built to take it.

The only rust I have on mine is about a three inch strip at about 10 o'clock on the n/s/f wing, everywhere else being fine, and the rear screens suffer with delamination. I love it!

What's your budget? Plenty of cars about for buttons but they can get expensive to maintain if you are fussy/lazy (like me)

Consider the 24v if you're after a pre facelift. Schizo engine & usually better spec.

Contrary to myth, they do have age/mileage issues like any other old car.

Mine is currently loaded up and ready to transport family B back to London. They are surprisingly practical for a 2 door car.

Have fun looking

UK magazine did 0-60 in 7.5 secs in the 3 litre coupe road test.

So, not slow.

LOL, drive a 190D for a while,and a 300E feels like a Lambo!!

Where did I say it was slow? - I said it feels gutless and made the comparison against a 320 - thats all.

I am currently driving a 300e-24v and it needs winding up before the engine wants to play
