On my PC in work I have 4 memory slots and only one being used with a 256Mb DDR memory. I am going to upgarde to 1Gb ddr memory. Is there any difference in performance between using 2 x 512Mb or using one single Gb card. I will ditch the 256's for use in a later project I have in mind.

if u use 2x512 it will work in dual channel mode which is slightley better than running 1gig in speed

Question
Would Geoff2 be better to get a matched pair rather than 2 x 512mb

Regards
John

The difference is negligeable tbh (about 5-7%) and you probably wont notice it.

Since the memory is cheap enough now (www.crucial.com/uk) my recommendation would be to stick in two 1GB sticks and be done with it for a while.

Cheers guys, I have to buy for 2 pc's so will do some shopping tomorrow.

Memory upgrade

Beware that not all PC mother boards will work up to 2 gig or even one. I have just upgraded my own PC ( Advent ) and it took extra memory ok ; My partners laptop has 2 slots but wont work at more that 2x512

It was worth taking it in to PC world who sold the memory ( competitive) and charged only £14.95 for the work . As it didnt accept 2x1 gig it saved me a lot of dosh by getting them to check it out and settling on what it could take;)

.... or you check what crucial says you can do with your MOBO.

Supporting what Sp!ke has said, if you log on to Crucial's website they have a utility that will scan your PC and recommend the best memory upgrade options.

The Crucial Memory scanner told me I had 4 memory slots so I ordered 4 X 1GB. When I went to fit them, there were only 2 slots inside the computer? Crucial will take returns though and refunded me as soon as I returned the unused memory. Very good service too.

Just to add my 2p ..

I have a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro V2085 .... with 512MB in two slots of 256 each ...

I have used their scanner , and it cant find my model , it finds a V2045 and a V3205 but not the V2085 ...

Hence i don't know what memory to order .... would like to go 2GB , but am unsure ...

I've mailed them but not had an reply yet ....

Anyone got any ideas ?

Open the case and take out the ram, it should be printed on the sticks exactly what they are... (most of the time...)

try here kingston memory lists

KFJ-FPC165/256 256MB 533MHz Module
KFJ-FPC165/512 512MB 533MHz Module

up to a maximum of 1GB probably all the bios will allow. I assume you have one 512mb already in one of 2 slots

http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/con...2060/V2065/V2085&distributor=0&submit1=Search

£16-56 inc shipping from SMC direct . http://www.smcdirect.com/ FOR THE 512MB

Well , the crucial scan shows that mine will accept upto 3GB

I only want 2GB , but i have 2x256mb in there at present as opposed to 1 x512mb

Howard you are running the MOBILE INTEL 915GM Express chipset and according to this it will address 2GB max http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_chipsets#Mobile_Chipsets
you may have to flash upgrade the bios --I don't know. You will just have to try it and see. As you probably know you are best to run matched pairs of memory modules in a 2 slot system so maybe 2 1gig modules would be OK. Kingston are pretty reliable with their specs so I don't know why they don't list a 1gig module unless there is a snag going to 2 x1gig modules i.e. >1gig total

Not doubting you for a minute Graeme ....

Crucial should have directed you to the CPU-Z site, they usually do,
http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

If you run that program it should tell you exactly what memory you need.

Thats interesting ... thanks ....

It says :-

DDR2 Dual Channel 512MB

Apparently i have memory by two different manufacturers in my slots , one is Samsung , one is Infineon .... both 256MB each ...

Max Bandwidth PC2-4300 (266 mhz)

So i need to find 2 x 1GB DDR2's ?
