dealing with sonystyle.co.uk

I don't know if its against forum rules but I'll say it...

I work for HP, and we have a friends / family store. They quite often do decent discounts on the models - usually better than other shops - but hey buyer beware.

If you would like access to have a look at some of the offerings, then let me know - all I need is your email address. It sends a link to you once I register you - that's it. You can then browse or not browse to your hearts content.

Just went to John Lewis and handled a MacBook Pro .. it is indeed a thing of beauty.

.... and long battery life.

Does standard MacOS include Safari? Is it any good? Firefox apparently much better?

Safaris is OK. If you don't like it then just download the Mac version of Firefox.

will it be difficult to load my PC pics, videos and Word files from external HDD to new Mac?

You'll need something to access the Word or other Office files - eg.

MS Office for Mac
OpenOffice for Mac
iWork 09

First is pricey. Second is free. Third is reasonable cost but quite different in terms of the user interface to the other two so needs a bit of commitment to learn.

Mac comes with iLife 09 as standard. This should be able to handle photos and stuff.

The top menu bar... or the bottom "dock" ?

Can't speak for others but it's the top menu bar for me.

I prefer a separate menu in each app main Window.

Why? Well you play about with multiple apps and Windows and you keep on having to go to the top of the screen to find the menus. And you have to click on the app to get the menu to switch. So you have to traverse more screen real estate to get to/from it.

Just went to John Lewis and handled a MacBook Pro .. it is indeed a thing of beauty. So well built and makes Sony and everything else look like complete rubbish.

Am going to order this tomorrow:

MacBook Pro, 13-inch, Aluminium
Part Number: Z0GL
2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 065-8490
4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB 065-8492
500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm 065-8498
SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW) 065-8501
Backlit Keyboard (British) & User's Guide (English) B065-8526
COUNTRY KIT B065-8519
£1192.55 (delivery included)

much cheaper and better than Dell Amado.

Go for the 15" - 13" is really quite restrictive...

Mac OsX includes safari; but if I were you I would download either Camino or FireFox. Safari has some issues with javascript.

Your pictures and videos wont be a problem, download VLC media player for video. Word files you can either download NeoOffice, open office or buy Microsoft Office (or Apple's iWork).

Dryce: Apple+Tab and Apple+Tilda. Tab switches between programs, and tildae between windows of a program ;)

So instead of moving the mouse across an excessive amount of real estate you're now suggesting that I have the hassle of switching between mouse and keyboard just switch apps :wallbash:

I rest my case!

Macbook Pro 13" ordered ..

tried to get additional (to corporate discount, which apparently is the same as the student/teacher discount) discount by calling, didn't work

Sonystyle would offer additional discount to joe public (me), but messed it up. Called today to cancel order properly. Waited 10 mins on the phone. Guy said he would call me back! I said no. Turns out he's the only one on duty!!!!

Dell would offer additional (in addition to corporate) discount, but expensive and unproven -- on the Adamo aluminium thing.

The only way I've seen of getting much of a Macbook is to buy from Dixons Tax Free while travelling domestically and see if you can persuade them to give you a VAT receipt. (They used to if asked - but I haven't done it recently)

Apple discounting even to public sector is not generous and comes across as being quite confused when you try and talk to them about contracts.

I'll NEVER buy another Sony product, their so-called customer services dept is an absolute joke. DELL does it for me.

Sonmy Customer Services Uk is one of the worst ! Had one few years ago and had to send them lots of stuff ( driving licence, bank statements ) for repair !?!??! God !

agree.

after they cancelled my order without bothering to tell me, I called them to find out what had happened.

they then siad they would reinstate my order, but only if I sent in proof of address.

I told them to take a running jump into the nearest lake, and then procreate ..

Macbook Pro 13" ordered ..

have had my MBP for a few months now.

am completely converted to Apple

Love it

especially:

1. the touch pad, the 1, 2, 3 and 4 finger movements are fabulous
2. the fast start up
3. the fast shut down
4. time machine -- easy harddisk backup
5. battery life -- amazing, about 4 hours
6. backlit keys
7. feel .. a lovely thing to behold

not so great:

1. some java websites don't work so well -- these are probably optimised for Windows

2. that's it

I favour Dell for work and Sony for play.

We have a VAIO at home and have had it 5 years this month, and it's been great.

I'm holding on to my Dell until I have no choice but to give it back. We now use HPs. Hmph.

My Dell D610 sadly gave up on me last Thursday, 3 years and 51 weeks after I got it. It's the first time I've personally had a problem with a Dell in 12 years of hard use. Bloke who finally said it was kinder to let it go said it was the motherboard.

A HP with too many flashing lights and too little RAM has replaced it. :(

so here's the thing I was offered a £300 discount on the LCD of my choice by a Sony
Style shop I just happened to pop into as I was passing by..

Is the general consensus here also applicable to LCD TVs or just limited to their Laptops?

I have a 40" Bravia LCD and love it. Like many LCDs the sound is not great (OK for Emmerdale and the like!) so go for surround sound for your favourite movies!
Also push them for as long a warranty as possible. Like all big screens, If they go wrong, they'll be expensive!

hmmmm they did offer the 5 year guarantee.. 849 for the KDL40W5810
