I've recently had a service at an MB dealer, the glow plugs were replaced. I have added a couple of hundred miles since.

This morning I started the car after the glow plug light went out only to hear a nasty clanging noise.
Sounds like all cylinders weren't firing.
The glow plug light reappeard and stayed illuminated for a further 45 seconds.
I tried starting the car at lunchtime with the same symptoms. The car runs fine after starting (all 6 cyls seem OK).

Is it OK to undertake a long journey before the dealer can fix the problem?

Yes, if it is the glowplugs.Sounds like it is, so once started everything will be OK. Bear in mind if it gets really cold you may not be able to start it if more than 1 plug is not working. You should also be confident that your battery is in good nick, as it may have to do a lot of churning!
