Do we still have engine snobbery?

Slightly off at a tangent but the noise of the 1 litre screamers in F3 in the 60s and 70s was unforgettable.

Its simple. You just cant match the relaxed gait of large NA petrol engine and a slush box auto. The fact you get effortless performance at more uncouth RPMs is just a bonus.

Its simply much more gentlemanly than smaller stuff and the filthy diesel's.

Quite an eclectic mix in our household, the other half drives a 1.0 3 cylinder, I drive a 4 cylinder diesel for work & I have a V8 for the weekend. Fours just leave me cold, I remember passing my motorcycle test & clamouring for an inline four. Very quickly I got bored of it & have had V-twins, triples & even sixes since. That said, I've owned a couple of 5 cylinder cars (petrol & diesel) & they have a sound all their own. V10s & V12s sound great but the crossplane V8 is the best sound in the automotive world imo.

My daily driver is a 520i MHEV which is a standard BMW 2.0 petrol with a twin turbo plus electric assist. That means you get an extra 15hp from electric and instant launch from roundabouts etc. It’s the ‘base’ engine and I was somewhat worried before trying one that it would be a bit crap. But….my goodness me. It’s a clever box of tricks. It is properly nippy. Sounds ‘ok’ but actually unless you rev it hard it doesn’t sound of anything. Totally silent. So you get 0-60 in 7.5 seconds. 145mph max and around 40-45mpg. It’s really rather good. I still love my CLK350 for the noise and drama but the game does feel like it has moved on.

For normal everyday use, you don’t need anything more than a modern 4 pot.

But I do agree the 6 and 8 cylinders sound epic.

Both my wife and i drive 4 cylinder turbo petrol cars mine being a 2 litre and wife being a 1.5 they both do great but do think mine sound better, my other weekend car is a no cylinder petrol engine and sounds like nothing else and always gets me grinning like a cheshire cat (wonder where that simile comes from?)

It's a matter of taste.

And they converse with you. Depends how you define lesser...

Not sure about engine snobbery here but there’s definitely car snobbery.
Interesting. I’ve always found MBClub to be by far the most inclusive online car community. Everyone is treated the same regardless of badge, engine, value, etc.

The only slight exception being comments on EVs but I don’t believe that’s about snobbery in the slightest, just a natural human reaction to change.

I would say that engine ignorance is more prevalent than engine snobbery. Much pub talk about BHP and Torque 0-60 times Etc. Most of it is nothing more than bragging rights and of little or even less than zero use in some cases. There are far more interesting engine related matters that could be talked about. If we go back to the steam age when double expansion cylinders were developed to reuse the steam at lower pressure, that was a major step forward. Today we have EGR valves !!!! Ya just got love Em !!!! So much so that we are having them blanked off mapped shut Etc.
I had a company Mondeo diesel that would throw itself into limp mode if you so much as looked at it. I called the AA out and the guy plugged it in, cleared the code and wandered off towards a waste bin, returned to the car with a drinks can. Five minutes later he had fashioned a blanking plate for the EGR valve. So 90,000 miles down the road the car was running fine.

Then we had Mr Ricardo with his patent cylinder heads, another amazing bit of kit was the horizontaly opposed two stroke diesel, fitted in Rootes Group trucks, affectionately known as the knocker. They had a very distinctive exhaust note and could miss a beat and start to run backwards, the only thing to do was stand well clear till a con rod let go. I find all the old clonkers much more interesting than todays BHP and torque stressed monsters.

Next time somebody puts up a post wanting advice on a car purchase for a friend or relative take note of the comments.

I would agree, it's not about snobbery, but also that it's not necessarily about human reaction to change either, it's more about being able to see through the net zero BS being peddled by the government's of the world.
As for engine snobbery, I didn't even know such a thing existed until I read this thread. How utterly puerile of folk to engage in such snobbery.
Thinks: Is it perhaps something to do with small appendage syndrome? 😄

Agreed, its not about engine snobbery as regared EVs, coz they obviously haven't got one.
But it's definitely a resistance to change as far as EVs are concerned. And absolutely, definitely a case of ignorance. 🙄🙂
