Dodgy practice by MB

No disrespect Glojo BUT Ford actually have better paint quality paint/finish on their cars than MB do now (as much as I love Mercs) from what I have seen on some of Ford cars' post 2002/2003. Mercedes cannot even sort out the issue with the orange peel effect on the paint work...

I really dont get this...I mean if you make a product ( I pressume you give it some sort of warranty ? ...as the manufacturer ) why should you not honor that warranty ? Who cares who supplied the item to a customer ?...you made it , assembled it, screwed the parts together, hired the workforce ( not illegal immigrants I hope ) etc etc...Surely if you had confidence in your product you would give it a cast iron warranrty ?... Knowone wants to think that customers are going to give your buisness a poor reputation in terms of quality and customer service
No, we're agents for manufacturers. If you like it's similar to the way some car manufacturers use independant companies to import their cars. The big ones (like MB) have their own companies, but outfits like International Motors Ltd import for Subaru. There was a bit of a row when they refused to honour warranties on parallel imported Subaru's, but then why should they when they've gained nothing from the sale in the first place, and have probably had their own profits depressed by the imports?

:D Surely that orange peel effect is part of the ap-peel? :) :)

Are Fords free of this modern phenomenon?

I can't comment on Ford but just the other day I was looking at some new Jags and thinking how much better the paint finish was compared to MB and BMW.There's a new XKR Coupe near me and the solid black finish is superb.Another reason to buy one of these rather than a BMW M6.
I walked past a new M5 in a showroom on my way to the parts department and the orange peel was shocking even walking past at distance.Even someone with poor visual awareness would surely be disappointed. The Germans seem blind to this for some reason ?
I'm sure the actual paint and equipment used is the same or similar which leaves the human factor.

I understand what your saying but claimants sometimes are not totally 100% honest. I am NOT suggesting this is the case on this thread, but how many claimants do NOT comply with the full terms and conditions of the warranty and still demand free repairs? I am NOT fussed what these terms are. If I don't agree with them, then I don't play the game. Does Ford, or any other motor manufacturer have a thirty year warranty?

If the vehicle fully complies with ALL the conditions then I totally agree with your post, who cares who owns the vehicle, it SHOULD BE COVERED. Full stop. Owning the car for six months is wrong, if it is covered then it should be fixed.

If however a car has had bodywork repairs by an unauthorised agent then surely that is failing to comply with the terms? Being serviced by a main dealer has nothing to do with the state of the bodywork, but surely in the real world we never get anything for nothing? I believe this requirement is a way to help finance this warranty which is above and beyond the EU required compulsory one?

I dont think mercedes owners could be dishonest ...the warranty is very strict and you would have to be Tony Blair to be able to deceive them. Mercedes do have an exceptional long warranty ...but by god you pay for it and I am sure many people only break even ( if not actually loose ) As for Fords they are bread and butter cars - very well made, handle superbly, have all the gadgets, and in my opinion are class leaders..by the way I dont own one but fair play to them...and a Mondeo would always be on my list for possible future cars.:)

Interesting how things change, Big X
I worked in a British Leyland garage 1979-82 (after having worked in a Mercedes garage) and we bought in a new 450 SLC. The paintwork on the Mercedes was streets ahead of the apalling quality of the Jaguars at the time - to the point where the mechanics were all looking (and comparing) the quality.

They don't make the Mercs like they used to.

Best paint work on any Merc I have owned was on my W126 S Class.

One of our neighbours has just traded his two year old top of the range Jaguar for the latest S-class Mercedes. The final straw was when the Jaguar dealer charged £250 for a software upgrade to the gearbox. His Jaguar experience has been a disaster and I fear this marque will not be gracing his driveway for many years to come. I am NOT defending Mercedes, I am merely suggesting some fields are looked at through some very rose tinted glasses. Orange peel effect will usually be found on most modern vehicles. I'm led to believe that water based paints are thicker in depth than the older oil based item. I am no paint expert and my experience of water based paints is mixed. Older, 'modern' Mercedes that have water based paints have more chip markings than a spotted **** edit: suet pudding :) has raisins. It is only on the nano technology that we are seeing a decent protective paint.

Hi Adam,
I am NOT criticising the gearbox, simply the fact that customers have to pay for software upgrades to it. My neighbour had to drive thirty miles to a Jaguar dealership with the vehicle in limp mode. The technician stated the box required a service upgrade which was £250.

JDPower is not something I tend to pay much attention to. I certainly do not dislike Jaguar, one of the members of this forum jumped from Mercedes-Benz into a Jaguar, I tend to read with interest their comments\experiences.
