One of the major causes of failure would appear to be lighting. Who doesn't check their lights at least on the day of the test? I've been around a few weeks and always had oldish cars, yet the only lighting problem I've had is headlamp alignment, apart from once when a bulb failed en route to the station.

A better indicator of reliability would be those cars that failed for expensive reasons.

Agreed , many rejections are the result of minor things that could easily be checked for and rectified by the owners beforehand .

With many cars , lamp failure is even indicated on the dashboard , yet some will no doubt submit a car with a fault showing !

I guess it often comes down to ignorance or indifference .
