Drove the new E350 CDI Coupe

Guess it depends how you drive. I do the occasional "spirited" start from the lights and hard cornering etc, and this can't help the tyres.

I often wondered how snow/ice affects tyre life. Does a tyre spinning on an icy road wear much? After all, it's slipping on ice not tarmac.

on my second e coupe , first one had conti tyres current one has dunlop sport tyres ,

I like occasional rapid starts but very occasional.
Yes, normal soft compound tyres do apparently wear quick on snow/ice because the soft compound becomes more like a hard plastic. I did read up about winter and summer tyres and it certainly would benefit in having these fitted but as the snow appears to have gone it looks like I will wait till next winter when there is no stock again and then I won't be able to purchase them.

Tyre wear

I have just brought a new pair of tyres for my E 350 coupe .The tyre fitter reckoned that Continetal tyres were too soft and would wear very quickly .He recommended Cooper tyres .These are the old Avon tyres that are still made in the UK .The previous set of rear tyre lasted 19,000 miles .

The car is currently in with Mercedes Epsom .A cam shaft sensor failed and there was a small oil leak in the top of the engine .

I really wouldn't recommend mixing tyres front to rear on a RWD with lots of torque, I had Conti Sport Contacts and Michelin PS2's on my E320cdi last summer and it was really twitchy, where as I had the PS2s and and P Zerro Rossos on before that and it was fine.

You may be fine, you may completely ruin the handling of the car, just not worth it.

Certainly not with Cooper tyres.

I'll be more than happy if I get to 19k with my rears! I think at the moment I'll manage about 14k max.

got rid of my one at 5k miles, I would say they were over half gone, there again it was driven like it was to be sold at 5k !!

I just upgraded to the Genuine 19inch AMG wheels for the E-Class Coupe and bought the MO Conti Sport Contact 3's. I will see how I get on with them. My original 18's had the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT MO and were good grippy tyres. Covered 9k in my car so far and the Dunlop's still had fair amount of tread. I have also heard the Conti's are softer compound but did a web search review on the Dunlop's and Conti's and they are pretty much the same in grip levels in wet and dry conditions. See how I get on with the 19inch. I don't see why the size of the rim would have any difference on how long the tyres last, it is more to do with the compound of the rubber used, so Jamren the service manager is talking rubbish.

how long a tyre last depends on how it is driven and how hard the compound is

Hard compound tyres last longer than softer ones, but have less grip. There is always a trade off

What worries me is that I have had 5 different powerfull Mercs all rear drive with big wheels and normally have got 18 to 22k from the rear tyres. The new Conti's must be very soft. Trying to get 255/30x19's is a problem even for the dealer, they are not a common size, most are 255/35x19. Hancook appears to best value, never had them before - any comments?

Just get some 265/30/19s, just about everyone does them and .5cm extra width will make sod all difference, you often get more difference than that depending on how each manufacturer measures their tyre.

Agree with the above comment. Having said that Hancook are a medium range tyre and have alway seen good reviews about them.

Have we all gone quiet on the permanent fix for the same reason... given up on MB and relying on injector resets every 5k miles??

No, But my car is still running smooth since the reset and I have no complaints, just loving the feel of the car now

Had mine reset last week at Brooklands - they categorically told me that no permanent fix is yet available. They started to tell me the temporary fix may not be covered under warranty, when I informed them that the word 'fix' implies a problem, they then agreed to carry out the reset. I suspect if I want another one, it may be more contentious...

Mines a bit noisy too but it's the 250 so a 4 pot - maybe I should expect this. I can hear te engine in the cabin even when it's warmed up - is this normal for his engine please?

2 cars is all we need to completely block the route (its private land if you do this in the right place) in and out of MBWorld.

With a strategically placed explanatory notice to all who would have to use the overflow car park as a result it wouldn't take long to resolve :)

Or you could construct a rejection letter and get them to buy the vehicle back after a year like me.

Has this problem been eliminated in the newer 265BHP engine that is used in the saloon? (Going in the coupe later this year?).

I doubt anyone really knows and as MB are still reluctant to truly class this as a 'problem' they'll be reluctant to answer. If you are planning to buy the 265hp engine I'd ask for a specific response from the salesman about the issue and how it has been rectified in the new engine. I'm sure everyone on here would be grateful to know the response you get?
