Drove the new E350 CDI Coupe

Picked mine up today, was told the fix applied was in fact only the temporary one, but a permanent fix was being released any day and I was welcome to come back for the full fix (which I will do early in the new year).

Sorry but they didn't know when exactly the new fix is to be released other than any day now...

Has anyone heard when either the new 350CDI or CGI engines will be available?

New 350 CDi engine is already available for the saloon model, but will only be available for the Coupe and Convertible from July 2011

E class estates have them too

Thanks for that. I thought it was going to be early in the new year rather than over six months away.

Does the revised engine that is already in the saloon and estate have the same issues with the injectors or is the problem just with the 'old' engine?

Having been to the garage yesterday for them to fix the potential failure of the power steering pump (official recall), I was told its got to go back in in January for the engine to be stripped down to find an oil leak - meantime I was instructed to keep topping up the oil of my £38K Mercedes that was new in March!!! Never again - roll on 2.5 years when I can get a decent car!

Having owned a car which was more trouble than it's worth (top of the range fully loaded Renault Laguna) and was in the garage more than on my drive, my Mercedes is a shining light of good build quality after that.

It has however made me a little more tollerant of the fact that cars can and do go wrong. All cars have their faults, no matter how much you spend on them or who makes them - I'm sure there are Veyron owners with issues.

What makes the difference is how the problems are dealt with when they occur.

My MB has to date been problem free. Yes, it has a couple of niggles (like the injector noise and gearbox hesitation) but as far as I am concerned they are minor and the car is still spot on.

Since I took delivery in March it has been to MB once - at my request - for a sat nav update and software update to ECU. My last car had a major gearbox rebuild (which they screwed up and had to fix countless other things as a result) and at least one major visit to the dealer every month by that point!

The visit to the dealer was faultless and the experience good.

Accepted, it just seems so much hassle and the build quality is just not as good as Volvo, the of which I have had in the past were completely faultless over a total of 6 years (2x 3 year lease)...

You really cannot make generalisations from your tiny sample of Volvos. Have a look at JD Power and Which to see what big samples say about the Volvos. Not very good.

I'm booked in tomorrow and finally it looks like the weather is on my side - had to cancel the last two appointments due to snow/ice.

They are doing the fix for the injector noise (which may or may not be permanent) and having a look at a couple of other things at the same time (squeel from passenger mirror when unfolding occasionally, double red lights on front Parktronic occasionally and something else so insignificant I can't even remember what it is right now :)

You have to speak from experience rather than denegrating products you have no experience of. My experience (along with 3 other members of staff who have C-Classes at work) has been very poor. Engine problems and (admittedly not in my case so far) trim quality issues (door handles falling off / electric window motors etc). We all say - never again!

Mine was in for it's first "A" service on Friday (£180 for an oil change!) no newer updates available for either g/box or injectors over what is all ready installed. Last updated about 8~10 weeks ago.

My first "A" is due in 75 days - looked today!

Just remembered what I am getting done tomorrow:

- Injector update
- Steering recall
- Mirror squeek when unfolding
- Double-red lights on front Parktronic (maybe once/fortnight for a few seconds)
- Investigate custer message saying "Pre-Safe Functions Limited" which only ever came up twice in September!

Got a number of things I could really do with having my own car for later tomorrow, so I might ask them to do the injector update and steering recall while I wait and just get the rest done when I have the service - after all, none of them are actually a problem as such and I am more than happy to put up with them.

Steering recall done and engine management update done. I waited in the end as it was only going to be a couple of hours and it saved me going back to the dealer later that day.

Immediately on getting back into the car it sounded different. Instead of a rough diesel clatter it sounded more like a V6 petrol - a nice noise.

This morning I had a chance to hear it when the engine was cold.

It still sounded a little rough when ticking over after starting (outside the car), but from inside it was very smooth and a big improvement.

Just spoke with SM, permanent fix still hasn't been released via the normal channels however he chased the factory and has subsequently been emailed an advanced copy of the alleged permanent update fix for the noisy injectors.
The info says to reset injectors then apply this update for the CDI control unit so sounds promising!!!
We figure this may be made available via the normal channels after giving feedback on the fix.
Car is being collected on the 29th to have this applied :D

Just out of curiosity how much were you guys charged for your A-Service? As mine is due in March 2011. Thanks.

My A service is due in March as well.

IIRC when I asked about servicing costs when I ordered the car it was under £200 - I remembet thinking how it was actually cheaper than my Renault Laguna I owned before! Aoraki (above) seems to suggest his A was £180 so that would also confirm that.

Do the prices change between dealers though or do MB set the pricing?

Thanks mbenz76. I would say MB set the pricing across the board. £180 sounds good, I was thinking it may have been closer to £300, but I guess that would be a B Service price then.
