Drove the new E350 CDI Coupe

not listened to the file yet, but am now noticing (with door open) that on idle the engine distinctly sounds like a diesel (funny that !), the characteristic diesel chatter is evident. However get to around 1000rpm and above, then this sound disappears completely right through the rev range.

Is yours like this ?

ps just listened now, yours sounds much like mine

Yes, definite diesel crackle at low revs, Oh dear, we are tuned right in now.

its just so much better than it was.

i can without doubt live the sub 1k rpm clatter, it can only be heard outside the car after all and is not really that bad. The engine for a diesel is so sweet 1k +, so torquey as well. I do like the car.
My last diesel was a mk 11 escort van, a BIG difference I can tell you :)

I only keep them about 18months but am thinking already that I would like to keep this one longer, it for some reason is so much nicer than the BMs and Audis, which are very good cars in themselves.

Not had a BM for about 6 yrs, but the new 5 series when it is launched is supposed to be quite some car, maybe that will swing me back !

I love the refinement of petrol, but am addicted to the torque of the big diesels. They really make cruising so effortless, and less time in the filling station being tempted by those 2 for 1 deals on Malteezers!

There is something about the mercs that keeps me coming back. I know what you mean.

Listen to me now, I was a different man to when it sounded like a truck!

Some of you have asked about economy, so I thought I would actually measure it for once.

Journey was 90 miles, A14, A11, ended in Norwich town centre. Drove swiftly, but not aggressively.

Average speed 65
40.6 MPG according to car computer.

This is better than the cls, by about 3 mpg. It has also improved since MB sorted the engine noise, or maybe the new found refinement just encourages more chilled out driving

Actually I need to recheck mine, I drive between Lincoln and London but have been getting about 36mpg. I need to do a full run on comfort without tickling the throttle now and again along with pressing the bloody sport button!
i normally potter on the motorway with cruise set to 76mph.

I am sure the book mpg's seemed daft? need to pull out the book tomorrow for another look.

The dreaded Sport Button...Less than a 500 quid option, but costs about the same per year in extra fuel!

Nothing like it though on a deserted country a road! A697 Morpeth to Coldstream , Sport Button Heaven!

I was gentle on the acceleration yesterday, very controlled out of traffic islands etc, cruise control set to 80 on dual carriage way, 78 on the A14 (If you know that road, you will know why). The A11 through Thetford has some stationary bits, but mainly steady 50. Sport button was banned.

OFFICIAL figures are
Urban (mpg) 31.7
Extra-urban (mpg) 50.4
Combined (mpg) 41.5

I am not sure how these categories are defined anymore. but you would have to be very careful, and lucky with traffic to achieve them I feel. I typically get an overall average of 33, with "spirited " driving. I will see if this increases now that engine problems are fixed.

Do any of you really bother to run your cars in anymore. The manual says take it easy for the first 1.5k, but I find I can never hold off for anywhere near that length of time on any of the new cars I get.

I only keep them for about 18months and have never seen any side effects in not running one in. Have any of you, I guess increased oil consumption when older could be one ??

You must have passed within a couple of miles of me....I didn't hear you:o

I drive normally, but try not to thrash. The dealer said no need to run in, and as usual, I didn't read the manual.:D

Wow, just checked the VCA official mpg website for the UK and I never knew that the figures were derived from a rolling road! Doesnt really say about the car turning corners etc so I would guess that the actual mpg figures given will be higher than actual road figures!

Imperial combined fuel consumption (mpg):
The combined figure presented is for the urban and the extra-urban cycle together. It is therefore an average of the two other parts of the fuel consumption test, Urban and Extra-urban cycles, weighted by the distance covered in each part.

Imperial urban fuel consumption (mpg) (cold):
The urban test cycle is carried out in a laboratory at an ambient temperature of 20oC to 30oC on a rolling road from a cold start, i.e. the engine has not run for several hours. The cycle consists of a series of accelerations, steady speeds, decelerations and idling. Maximum speed is 31mph (50 km/h), average speed 12 mph (19 km/h) and the distance covered is 2.5 miles (4 km).

Imperial extra-urban fuel consumption (mpg):
The extra-urban cycle is conducted immediately following the urban cycle and consists roughly half steady-speed driving and the remainder accelerations, decelerations and some idling. Maximum speed is 75mph (120 km/h), average speed is 39mph (63 km/h) and the distance covered is 4.3 miles (7 km).

- JohnDeere - I was told by the sales guy they didn't need running in but at the time I think that he was as excited as me to get out the showroom and see what the 350 is all about! I read the manual and ran mine carefully (albeit a few minor harder accelerations than a snail, but not excessive at all :) ) for the first 1000 miles fairly reservedly. I aim to keep this for at least 3 years and want to treat it (apart from the tyres) good :p

I keep my cars for 3 years, and usually clock up between 75 and 90k. Only the BMW 535 every gave any bother, the cats went at 65k, with a bill for £1800. I got some good will, which reduced the damage to £300. No mech probs with the mercs whatsoever.

Great idea, The new web page is loading up as we speak, so you might need to give it a few minutes.

I used same conditions, car from cold. Have a listen to both and let me have your comments.

I am very happy, at last!:p

My Troubled E350CDI Sport Coupe

What a difference!! Did you get anynames of the guys from MB incase anybody else needs their skills input?

a comment on the "pinking"...
I have had my 350cdi coupe now for six months and the "pinking noise was there under acceleration but I noticed that it seemed to be fuel related.
ordinary diesel it was sometimes bad (Esso & Tesco) less so on BP or Jet and much less on BP Ultimate.
However since using BP ordinary with Millers Diesal Power Ecomax added, the "pinking" noise has completely disappeared. It took a couple of tanks to take effect but no noise !

Same here, only had a problem with the supermarket fuel. Been using BP Ultimate since and car is so smooth that it's difficult to tell that I'm driving a diesel. Love the extra torque you get with the engine:thumb:
