Drove the new E350 CDI Coupe

Now working again, cheers.
I will be able to give the loan saloon a good run to London on Tuesday.
With my fuel I always fill up on Shell V-Power although I did on one occasion put a full tank of normal Shell diesel in to see if it made a difference with the mpg and it did go down by 2mpg, but there could have been other reasons why it did this (still same run to London). Even so, I only managed 39mpg on a run to London on standard diesel :wallbash:

I have put some Millers into a full tank (now half used) and I swear it is already a bit quieter (maybe it's just a placeboo effect!). I agree - seems so much hassle in a £36K car (in my case). I heard an Audi 3.0TDI from otside today - sounded much nicer revving and soooooo much quieter idle than the Merc. My first and last diesel!

I was disapointed by the interior space of the E coupe. it was just the same as my old C220 (2007 model), shoulder wedged against the door pillar, knee cramped against the tranny tunnel. rear seats only any good for 3year olds or Heather Mills.

Its not an E its a souped up C.

Went with E saloon instead .

HI all

My e350cdi coupe has been noisy at cold/?pinking few months. Took it to dealer who initially said ?contaminated fuel. I told him that i always use BP ultimate and have filled it several times in the period the noise has been there.

Got some feedback last week stating that Mercedes aware of problem and some literature/?fix has been sent to dealers. Once they figure this out will get car in.

Agree that too noisy for v6 diesel. Walked pass an A5 the other day at lights and sounded so smooth - when it went past was a 2.0TDI!!!! - ours must be really noisy if i found that to be smooth!!

Watch this space. Will feedback

Regards

Thanks for the update Docman, mine is being collected tomorrow so will also update at the end of the week.
I was going to ask if I should bother with the Millers additive but I too only fill up with V Power plus and shouldnt have to put an additive in surely.....

Agree with you Wonkycustard, I owned a CLK270 for a while and when I was shown an E350 coupe I was smitten by the looks although when I got inside it didnt seem any bigger than my CLK and didnt take me long to realise it was the same body. The coupe is perfect for me as I havent really owned anything bigger than the CLK and the size fits. I even thought the cabin in the E350 seemed smaller than what it was due to the low black rooflining but I wasnt physically cramped so got one :p

Well, same drive down to London today and as I thought the E350 saloon exceeded my coupe mpg. Saloon V6 3.0 gave the following (same engine):

after 36 mins - 20miles - avg 33mph - 50.2mpg
54 mins - 33miles - avg 37mph - 49.5mpg
2hrs - 107miles - avg 52mph - 47.4mpg

This is on a brand new E350 Saloon with 800 miles on the clock, same journey I take every other week and the majority of the journey is using cruise control set to 74mph wherever possible. I would struggle to get 40mpg on the same run in my coupe that has done 6000 miles.
Also the engine was nice and quite whereas when I started mine it sounded like a truck, lets see what they come back with.

Although the mpg doesnt sound much, I would be happy to achieve the above as currently for every 500 miles I do, I am losing approx £9.50 in fuel (did some quick math on the journey down).

Hi

Yes - agree re economy - i am averaging around 30mpg past 5000 miles in the e350cdi according to trip computer - i am not a boy racer by any stretch and until today hadn`t really paid much attention to the MPG in the merc. My 730d sport does 35-38 mpg same journey cycle!!!

Could the folks with the e350cdi check one thing next time they are driving - i have noticed when at steady speed - especially cruise control - the rev counter flickers slightly but noticeably. Not noted this in any of my other cars.

?linked to rough engine noise we have been hearing

Just noticed the mpg specs on both cars, how ironic that the coupe has higher figures than the saloon (I know its marginal but nevertheless in the real world this loan E350 saloon is whooping my coupe by a fair amount).

COUPE E350 on the left (or on the top if you have a small browser)

The coupe is a smidge lighter than the saloon which is probably why it shows a difference in urban figures.
The fuel figures in the loaned saloon are in line with what I would expect, and can only think that it is your coupe (and not you!) that is poorly:(

My coupe is the same averaging roughly 29mpg across broad range of conditions. Had a long run yesterday (350+ miles) on motorway and managed to get to 36mpg...

Could i ask e350cdi owners to monitor if rev needle fluctuates slightly at steady speed- esp when cruise control on.

Also has anyone lese noted after journey around 10-15 miles, when at standstill and rev engine, sound like valve vibrating on deceleration of rev meter between 2k and 1k - diasppears when switch off and re-start. Also note lot of heat from under car when this happend??

Confusion..........confusion...............:dk:

My overall average for 20000 miles is 32.8mpg according to the computer, I would describe driving style as "spirited" I can achieve 38 - 40 if not exceeding 80, and accelerating with care. Consumption seems v high when cold, so unless you have a long journey to work, this may drag it down.

I have added some Millers. Pinking is present, but softer in nature, less obtrusive. Only 1/2 a tank in so far (shell vpower), I will monitor and come back in a few days with an update. Cold start still too noisy for me, but sounds more even, a little smoother, if that makes sense.

This will be purely a function of the CC applying loading to the engine, i..e opening the throttle so to speak...

All automatic cars will do this as its a function of the TC not being fully locked up. When power is applied revs rise slightly at the same speed. Try going 70mph and lifting off the throttle, then back on, you'll see the revometer move whilst the speedo stays constant.

Nothing to worry about and would be doing the same if you were driving the car yourself rather than the cruise.

Docman

Ran on cruise at 70, 75 and 80 on flat (Cambridgeshire), revs were steady. I have seen the needle do as you describe wheb not on cruise, but I think that is normal, as there is no direct connection qith an auto box.

As for the vibrating valve sound, I cant picture that one I am afraid.

It will be steady as the car won't be adjusting its fueling on the flat, try using CC in a hilly area and you'll see it, as the engine load will change as more power will be applied by the CC to maintain the same speed.

New E350 Coupe

I have driven the new E350 Coupe and to be honest the E250 seems as good to drive and not wanting.

I've always found that using Cruise Control uses MORE fuel not less...I prefer to drive normally but use the speedlimiter....
