Not too different as they pass by

Here's the new Volvo S60...... do I need to say more?

S60_exterior_02.jpg

The XF is so anonymous on the road, unlike the CLS. Every time I see one I genuinely think it's a Mondeo.

Well im going from a CLS55 to a XFR and my spectrum purple on 20" with side shiny bits wont be subtle :p

It looks a bit Mondeo also a bit Aston saloon - as Im in it not out of it the cabin matters and its lovely - and fully trimmed as standard (leather dash)

All that is similar is the overall shape - as with many cars - they all go through the same after all.
Beyond the coincidence of them both having 4 wheels each, they are so different in every detail. The sharply defined C pillar and wheel arches of the Mondeo, The swage line on the doors, the curvature of trailing edge of the rear doors, the separate bumper, the sill treatment, the proportions of the wheels, rear light shape, tacked on spoiler - all different.
As for the Volvo - excuse me, but wasn't this a discussion about a stunningly pretty car? Who allowed the Volvo to gatecrash without invite of credentials?

Truth is, what we are seeing here is the cross pollination that occurred when all were under Ford ownership.
And while it is a personal belief, I really do believe the XF to be stunning. I viewed one for about half an hour in the street a month or so back. And it was perfect from every angle. More than that, it looks bang up to date, while still managing to incorporate traditional Jaguar cues but staying a million miles from pastiche.
Pity Jaguar haven't quite managed the same feat with the XJ which misses beauty on a few counts, not least a horizontal shut line across its nose, a feature of a number of recent cars and a result of pedestrian crash legislation I'll wager.
The XF interior also brings a freshness while harking back to finishes familiar from the early 70s, and the retractable gear lever is genius in the same way the 'Randall handle' was when Jaguar introduced it.

The salesman was adamant that the XJ ride was the same on 18, 19 or 20" wheels. However, my own experience with all other cars would indicate that the low speed ride quality is directly proportional the rim to road distance and inversely proportional to how good they look.
So, I suspect so, but can't confirm.;)

I was told the same, and like you, my experiences with other makes differed. However, having driven some XF's with different size wheels, the salesmen are kind of right and I could not really feel a radical difference between the the diferent wheel sizes, my passengers even less so. I've not driven a new XJ yet so can't comment on that but I'm wondering if its a similar situation.

I owned, up until a week ago, a W211 E Class riding on airmatic with the optional 17" wheels. I have now just bought an XF Portfolio with 20" wheels and 255/35 tyres as standard, and the ride quality considering the wheel size is very good indeed in my view. I have driven and hated the comfort of BMW's with 18's and sports suspension and Audis with the same and there is just no comparison in ride comfort. Another regular driver of my old W211 reckons that the Jag rides as well as the Merc did on Sports 2 setting. My view is that its not *quite* that soft as you seem to have a bit more road feel, but its not that far off it.

My guess is that its the spring / damper settings that Jaguar use that seems to cater for all the stock wheel sizes quite well, as AFAIK a sports suspension (i.e. BMW M Sport, Audi S line) is not offered on the Jags other than a dynamic setup which uses a CATS type suspension, which is a different thing. Of course, I could be talking b***ocks here :)

The whole ride comfort thing is pretty subjective; whats comfortable to one person may be wallowy to another and so on, but from my personal experience I was really pleasantly surprised at the comfort on the 20's. Yes, ultimately the laws of physics say that the same car on the same suspension with taller tyres and smaller wheels will ride softer, but in this case I'm not sure the difference is as big as what you would normally expect it to be.

Anyway, hope I have not drifted off topic too much, just thought i would comment :)

Not at all! Some very interesting comments:)
Certainly agree about the Audi and BMW sports packages, just plain harsh.
I also have driven XF's on 18 and 19" rims and really could not tell the difference although the drives were in different places. Likewise 255/45/18 and 255/40/19 on the S Class were not really very different. Going up to 20 and 21" the ride was slightly firmer but it was the wheel control that suffered with the increased weight of the wheel/tyre combination.
It is quite possible that Jaguar have tuned the supension to cope with all the sizes on offer if the overall wheel/tyre weights are similar, but I know from Jaguar stylist Ian Callum that he loves the look of the 20" wheels despite, in his own words 'the ride compromise';)

Was reading what cars evaluation group test of the XF, F10 530d, E350cdi 212 and the A6.

The XF won the test although the BM was given an extra star. They rated the E class 3rd and its let downs were slow steering, and the Audi Last.

I really like the look of the new 5 series, its very expensive though and the XF is good value for money-just not a jag man although the engines are good but as expected iffy electrics. The 212 would be a good choice and even in AG spec still very comfy but would want sport even though in sport trim they put these naff lexus style exit pipes (ala GS460h) rather than on the AG 2 nice polished chrome exhausts.

MB vs Jag

Hi all first post on here. I noticed the quandry with the Jaguar vs MB and having just purchased my first MB (350CDI E class Sport) and my mate just happening to have purchased a Jaguar XF 3.0D S Premium Luxury, thought a picture of the 2 side by side would help. Notice the colours, MB is Palladium Silver, Jag is Lunar Grey both look Gunmetal Grey to me and I've just been tested for colour blindness (which I passed)

Did you take any rear view pictures of the two together?

The E Class from that angle looks really good in that colour / spec.

I'm more of a Jag fan than an MB fan but from the above picture, I think I'd go with the exterior appearance of the E Class - just looks a bit more 'together' than the Jag.

Tend to agree with you, the XF in the pic has the aerodynamic and S pack (extra body mouldings, bright strip on splitter, black grille etc) by the looks of it, which I'm not that keen on myself. If you viewed them from the back its probably a different story though, as I dont think the W212 works so well from the rear :)

I have always thought that there has been something of a media conspiracy not to state that the XF is very similar in appearance to the mondeo.
After Clarkson led the motoring press' attack on the x-type being a mondeo re-badge it was just too convenient that NOTHING was said this time around....IMHO

I really don't see the likeness between the Jag and the Mondeo. To me the XF looks like a squashed Lexus GS. I know its a good enough car, just not for me. I've yet to drive one, apparently they are very good to drive and thats why the press love them so much.

The rear of the 212 is downright ugly ! imho of course !
