Hi
I am missing some background dash lights in the area around the driving lights switch - RHS of steering wheel.

I started to remove the plastic part that holds the air vent and the lights switch and the handbrake lever but notice that in the handbrake area there are three screws but only two are accessible - the other one is covered by the handbrake black plastic arm that slides in and out. To remove this screw do you have to release the entire handbrake lever mechanism up under the dash. It started to rain so I had to abandon job.

Any ideas would be much appreciated

Cheers

Recycles is right, on most Mercs that area does not light up as a whole. On some cars, there will be a led lighting up if the lights are on (like in my s-class) and most will also have a light indicating that the fog lights are on.

But there is no general background illumination for the entire switch area in most Mercs.

I assume I should have lights in the area around the switch to highlight whether side lights or main beam is on. Also on the passenger side a little white stripe on the wheel for adjusting the air vent lights up but not on driver side.

The only part of the light switch that lights up is when I pull the switch out for fogs front and rear.

This is from my s-class. The led by 1 lights up when the headlights are on, the indicators at 2 light up when front/rear fogs are on.

When you switch from dipped to main beam, a blue main beam indicator lights up in the cluster.

On older models, the leds for 1/2 aren't there. An orange light inside the switch itself will come on when you switch on the fogs.

My switch is slightly different - I dont have the auto position, but I thought the 2 symbols just below the auto should ligth up on my car but now that you have explained it maybe they dont. The symbols inside the switch do light up on my car. In general this area of the car looks very dark so I guessed bulbs must be gone.

On my car I dont have the symbol marked by "1" in your drawing and the symbols "2" do light when switch is pulled out for front or rear fog lights.

Thanks for the replies

that is how it should be.
lights for fogs only. parking lights do not light. main beam and high beam on your dash.

Just out of curiosity does anyone know how the third screw under handbrake lever is removed? Does the lever have to be release under the dash first - I havent pulled the cover off the base of steering column yet to have a look at the set up.

Thanks again

Why do you want to take it off

I had planned to take it off to check if there were bulbs blown in there - it sounds like I dont need to now but still just wanted to know out of curiosity!!!

Its the way I learn I guess.:)
