Not sure if I have ever noticed the sound of the Turbo, but 5 mins and the limp mode copuld be spot on. If one of the modulators has gone will I get a change in the fault by swaping them?

Well Thursday I swapped the modulators around and it made no difference on the drive home from work, friday that car was back to normal again.
I'll now have to wait till it goes again.

Check the EGR valve and turbo wastegate are actually being operated. Try sucking ont he EGR valve pipe, the wastegate you can see when idling.
It may be worth having the codes read to see what is being stored.
