Probably a silly question but I cant work this one out.

I am trying my first DIY oil and filter change. I got hold of the special oil filter removal tool from the stealership. My question is that I was expecting the tool to fit directly over the plastic filter housing and to remove the cap. The tool I've got does not fit, it is much too small. Am I supposed to remove the top off the filter housing first & then use this tool ? if so, how is this done. Is there another tool for removing the top ?

Photo of the filter housing is at
www.porthkea.com/filter.jpg

Any help appreciated

Hi

Your engine is the same as mine and an oil change is simple.
The stealership have most likely supplied you with the oil filter removal tool for the petrol engines which do not have a "nut shaped" portion at the top like yours and whose body is slightly smaller.
All you need is a 36mm socket (just run out to the garage in the rain to check size) which will fit the nut on top of the filter.

Any problems post again or PM

Re: oil filter removal tool

Thanks Brian. So, are you saying that I only need to undo the filter housing using a 36mm socket and that I wont need the special tool as this is for the petrol engines ? I'm surprise the stealer gave me this tool as they had my chassis number etc but I guess that they can make mistakes.

Hi again

If the filter on yours is the same as the photo you take the lid off after loosening with the 36mm socket and lift the paper element and replace with new one. There are two small o rings that are then renewed before replacing the cap. Before removing the lid place a cloth around the housing to catch any drips.

Good Luck

The correct "tool" for the diesel engines OM604, OM605, OM606 is just a 36mm socket such as the hazet 2169-36 which is Mb part number : 606 589 010 900 and costs about a fiver from the stealership.
