E55 ended at £3,300!!

the price of big cars is quite scary at the moment, there's an S500 on ebay which only got bid up to £200 - ok, the pics and description were crap but that's a terrible price for such a car.

There's a few S500s gone for under £2k (or not sold as the case may be). E55s are failing to make anything like the prices they should be doing. Maybe there really is no money around.

We've been thinking this evening and there's no reason not to buy something "stupid" at the moment. we are relatively debt free (but we'll be buying on a loan) and we don't do huge annual mileages so why not take advantage and buy a car we've always wanted but have been too tight to spend big money on? :)

Car: '95 E320 T .... is that a turbo ?

im very tempted to buy a cl55 amg as they are listed at £15k and might get a grand or so off for cash (as opposed to buttons)

cars are so chaep atm

no turbo, it's an E320 estate. I keep looking at these turbo conversions and even got to the point of talking it over with a couple of mechanics. The whole thing kept coming back to the "man maths" :) The cost of modding my engine, the kit and the increased insurance premiums put me into selling our old (1978) 280E, giving the 320 to Annie (my other half) and buying something factory built for myself bracket......... and that was before the prices started dropping!

Now, for less than the price of the TT kit and rebuilding my engine, I can pick up an E55 (or an S500) with full MBSH and half the mileage mine has done (in some examples we've looked at almost 1/3rd of the mileage!!!) and my insurance premiums only go up by about £50 a year :)

So, it appears that man maths has been replaced by female logic and we are going to spend the next few days looking for another car :)

its not worth the money hassle, you always want what you cant have/aint got and when you get it you realise its not all its cracked up to be

i prefer gfp 2 to gfp 3 as it looks better and has the right colour combination

just seen the WALD kit for the late w124 coupe and made a damp mess as i want it and its only £850!

so many choices it makes me dizzy

as for an E55 if i could get my fat **** in a 4 door id probably have one

tell me about it, I've already got a "project" sitting in the garage trying to work out how to get a "useable" 250 bhp out of an aircooled VW engine for the beetle I'm rebuilding :)

That is cheap! Just picked up an LS400 as an interim runaround since could not find a decent W140 S-class (some sellers are...em.....optimistic shall we say in the asking prices!).

An E55....hmmmm...... :-)

I know that may (initially) sound like a daft question but if the whole car has little or no value then what are second hand spares worth?

been discussed many times but cars are worth less than the sum of the parts, people will want the wheels, interior etc, look at the guy who spent ages trying to get rid of his E36 in silver on here a while back, ended up breaking it and no doubt got a lot more for it, thats why breakers yards exist, they couldnt if there was no money in it,

Anyone needing an expensive item will surely just buy another car and transplant the bits

was that not my point?

I've got to agree with Mark here, it's ripe for breaking.

There's a guy on the forums here with a rattly C43 V8 - that's an engine transplant just waiting to happen!

The staggered AMG 18" wheels (8s and 9s) have got to be worth around £500.

Gearbox, diff, bumpers, lights, mirrors, interior - it's all worth cash.

Not saying that you'll double your money overnight, but at £2k or thereabouts you could easily make a few quid out of it with enough time/space and inclination.

I know what you are saying but if the cars are that easily available (there seem to be plenty of them around the 4-5k mark) they just aren't worth buying to break in order to make a profit.

If you already own the car, then yes, you'd probably get more for it by selling it in parts but it takes time, effort and a lot of space to store a stripped down car and once the useful bits have gone you are left with an awful lot of metal you need to get rid of :)

Weigh the shell in for scrap, another £100-200 I would think.

I'm not sure the target market would be limited to E55 owners looking for spares - a lot of people with other models (eg regular W210s) seem to spend cash on upgrading their cars - leather interiors, AMG cluster, AMG bumpers, AMG exhaust etc etc.

You could probably sell the wheels, bumpers, exhaust, cluster, interior for over a grand within a week or so. Then you can take your time with the rest of the car before stripping out the more awkward parts.

I'm sure someone would pay a few quid for a working '55 engine and / or gearbox etc?

I know it's not the easiest task to break a car for spares but it can be quite a fruitful excercise if you do have the facilities to do so :)
