E55 AMG
Hi,
The painful time is fast approaching to replace the rubber on my 2001 W210 E55 AMG.
Might only do the rears for now as the fronts look as though they may hang in there for a couple more thousand miles.
Seeing as there is only a £10 or £15 difference between Michelin Pilot Sport 3 and Continental Sport Contact 3, I'm not fussed about which to go for.
Has anyone got any experience of using both? Which ones have a better lifespan and which ones create less road noise/give a better ride?
Finally, can anyone recommend a cheap supplier?
Many thanks.

I have no specific experience to compare, but based on the same manufacturers on my cars, I would say both will last well and the Michelin may last slightly longer, and both will perform well and it will be difficult to tell the difference in performance unless you're a much better driver than me!! :D

Try Event tyres.

You might want to consider the Conti Extreme Contact DWS.
The Conti Sport Contact 3 are max performance summer, whereas the EC DWS are ultra high performance all season which makes a difference in cold wet driving conditions.

Bridgestone RE0960AS are also an excellent choice.

AMG driving school in the USA uses the DWS's on the track as they don't require the same amount of heat to grip as the Corsa's which are a track tire and are more predictable.

I replaced the Pirelli Corsa's on my CLK63 BS with the Conti EC DWS and find that they give a great ride quality and are more then capable of the most extreme handling situations you can attain in street driving...

For road use get Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2, they really suit the E55 with lots of grip wet or dry, comfortable and really inspire confidence. O. The downside they do wear quicker than Conti's I had 6k on my last set but hat did include a few 1/4 mile runs at Santa Pod.

Have never used the Goodyears on anything like as powerful as an e55 but have had them on both of my last 2 cars and agree with savman about the confidence they give. Even reasonably good in snow. I managed about 12000 miles wear on my A4.

Having driven on Michelin Pilot Sport 3s (and 2s historically), I much prefer them to Continental Sport Contact 3s.

Just better all round out of those two.

I had Conti SC3 on my CLS55 .. the rears lasted 15k miles, including a track day. Great tyre.

I had the Goodyear F1 Assymetric 2 on my Boxster .. hopeless pieces of garbage.

Thanks to all for advice. Event tryes do seem the cheapest and I'm leaning towards the Michelins after looking at comments on here.
Thanks all.

I could disagree more just went from F1 A2 to Cont SC3 on the same car, my E55 and cannot believe how bad the SC3 are. The rear end steps out all the time, noise is higher and in the wet hopeless.
When did you have them on your Boxster?

I'm lovin Michelin Supersports at the mo as a Summer tyre, not sure if they do em in 'Caster wheel' size! ;)

(I'm assuming your running 245/40/18 & 265/35/18 F&R?)

If not then PS3's :D

I always went for Michelin PS2, some positive reviews on Vredestein tyres.

Conti SC3's on my CLS are excellent - no complaints at all. Seem to be lasting a long time as well. Always had Bridgestones on other cars which were very good too.

I had the SC3s on the CLS and PS3 on the CLK. I found the SC3s did not last anywhere near as long - OK the CLS was putting out more torque but the CLK still chewed up a set of P Zeros in 8000miles. I like Michelin tyres, I find the last well and give a good compromise between wet and dry grip, if you really want to push the boat out get the Pilot Super Sports, an excellent tyre.

FYI the cheapest place I have recently found for Michelin PSS is F1 Autocentres.

Got the super pilot sports on mine.
Best overall high performance tyre at the moment

I've only just picked up this thread and may be too late to offer my experience re; best tyre prices in reply to the original question.
I've used Kwik Fit's online process several times and always achieve best available prices. Much cheaper online than going to a Kwik Fit depot for prices, though once purchased online, my local depot sources the tyres and does the fitting by appointment. Excellent service.

I am due for a new pair on the front. 245/40/17's

I am interested in wear, noise and wet performance (in that oder I guess).

I found this review which suggests that Goodyear Eagle FT Asymetric 2 are best allround, followed by BF Goodrich G Force Profiler and Michelin Contact 5

So on the AMG I have had CS3 As originals and have had a couple of pairs, on advice from others have switched to Michelin PIlot Super Sports for the rear and they are much better in wet ans summer temps. The PSS beats CS3 but the CS5 is supposed to be better but no experience with that tyre. For winter I swear by the Vreds all round - dont drive without them.

Hope that helps.
