Today it flashed up saying engine oil visit work shop. So when i got home i let the car settle for about 10/15 minutes and then checked the oil, the normal method said oil ok so i checked the instrument cluster and that came back measuring 7.6L of oil. But isn't there supposed to be 8.5L in the E55 W211 ? I do have a dipstick in the boot but I'm sure it's aftermarket as its just in MM and ranges from 50-200 so i have no clue where min and max would be on it ? Its also a Bitch to get all the way down as its about a meter long :wallbash:

The difference between max and min will be in the manual. Mine says 2 L and that's on a 5.5 L max fill so I'd guess yours would also be a least 2L. That would mean the min will be a fair bit lower than 7.6 L.

That's why I'm confused about it saying visit work shop for the oil. Plus its just had an oil and filter change 5 days ago. But I'm sure these engines hold 8.5L if not 9 ? And 90% of these cars don't come with a dipstick so it has to be aftermarket doesn't look genuine MB

My E55 took 8.5lt of oil on its last service.

If you do decide to add oil, put in 0.5 lt at a time and re measure before adding any more.
Its a lot easier to add oil than remove it.

Did a dealer do your recent service or an indy? Sounds like it may not have had enough put in at the service.

Sounds like they didn't know / bother to top it up to the right level.

Definitely 8.5 litres - just use the internal measure as you already have.

I fill mine up to 8.4 usually as keen to avoid over-filling.

If you do fill up, do less as suggested but ensure you leave enough time for the oil to reach the bottom!

I did the service myself with a vac and added 8L of mobi, i have used the car a lot since the service (Mostly Motorway miles) so it has used half a litre. Can you check your instrument cluster on your E55 and confirm it registers 8.5L oil as mine is saying 7.6L but still saying the oil is ok on the other oild check method :dk:

After the first time I got moaned at about low oil - I topped it up to 8.4 - took a couple of litres I think.

I then monitored and learnt that mine gets through more oil than any of my previous performance cars did.

So when I next checked, it wasn't moaning but the level was 6.7 or 6.8 I think.

So your one using 0.5 litre in a short space of time wouldn't concern me (unless you have a leak which I'm sure you would have discovered by now although they all leak to some extent apparently but nothing major).

8.5 litres is correct. Mine took exactly that, and was bang on the full mark on the dipstick (aftermarket - it did not come with one).

Thanks for the help guys I appreciate it. So 7.6L is not something to be worried about ? Just best to keep an eye on it. What would you say is the lowest level the car should be run on ? I agree with the car being the most oil greedy car i have owned too. I was just concerned because it was telling me to visit workshop for oil but the oil checked ok and also showed 7.6L normally it would say something like add +Litres of oil not visit workshop. Strange. :dk:

E55BOF..... Does your dipstick have a min and max or is it like mine with just a mm measurements?

It was (I think) in mm, but there was a conversion chart with it to tell me what the appropriate levels were for the various models and engines. I no longer have it - I marked the levels on a cheapo-cheapo (and almost uselesso-uselesso) transmission dipstick I had bought, and now use that. I've learned to trust the electronic measurer, though.

The manual states that those messages may appear. I've only seen an oil too low message before.

I check my oil level when I think about it rather than wait for it to state the oil level is too low.

The car would show you an error all the time if the level were too low so 7.6L is probably OK.

Manual states up to 0.8L per 1000km of driving - more if you drive fast!

So probably what we experience is normal.

Thanks guys puts my mind at rest a little. Apart from trusting the electrics but I'm guessing i will have to learn too trust it. One last question maybe one of you might know the answer too. My friend has the SL55 exactly the same engine as ours, but when he starts his it tells him the oil temperature and stays red until the temperature warms up and then the car can be driven hard then changes to green. So the question is do our cars have such a thing ? Or a way to check the oil temperature to make sure its at a good running temperature before driving it hard ? As I'm pretty sure the temperature gauge on the dash is water :dk:

^ Unfortunately our E55's aren't fitted with that oil temperature device.
I don't give mine the beans until the water temp is up to 80C.

You are correct in thinking the gauge on the dash is for coolant temp:thumb:.

Worth noting that the oil takes longer to reach operating temp than the water, on the SL I wait till the oil pressure gauge drops below 3 on idle. On the other vehicles I just give it 5-10 mins after coolant has reached operating temp

That's why i asked because the water/coolant temp warms up pretty quick. I normally give mine a good 5miles to warm up first, guess i will have to stick to that method.
