Hi, Anybody with the above ever been pulled at Mot time? and if not whats the chances
thinking of having this done but do not want a massive headache when it comes to Mot test
Cheers Dave

I've had 4 MOT's at two different centres since my secondary cat and resonator removal and no comment has been made about missing cats or exhaust mods.
The tester is looking at emissions, not counting cats.

If you get a tester who is really tough, you may get picked up.
Take your old cats and resnator away when you have it done just in case you want to reverse it.
Just do it Dave, it sound so much better.

Hi, had the same mod carried out on my E55k and has had two MOTs at two separate garages with no comment.

Another vote for getting it done for a better sound.
I get a bit of a drone at 70 but lovely at all other speeds.

For those of you that did this, where was your X pipe located?

I have seen two variations
1) X pipe at the resonator box location with straight through at the secondary cats
2) Straight through at the resonator box location and X pipe at the secondary cats

^ Mine was done option 2.

To be honest, I don't think it makes any difference which way its done.
Both the cats and resonator are removed and its only the positioning of the x-pipe that is any different

Yeah I would imagine an X closer to the headers would give a marginally better performance? (mixing gasses earlier)

Has anyone got any vids to demonstrate the sound?? I have 2004 E55 (completely standard and original. Would like a beefier sound but don’t want it too on your face like a silly boy racer, need it to sound it means business but still reasonably refined in the cabin when on the move..

Mine was also option two. I don’t think this gives any more bhp as it is the manifold, headers and primary cats that stifle the engine.
Mine has a low deep rumble on starting and tick over, not really loud when driving nicely but does growl when I put my foot down.
I am more of a wolf in sheep’s clothing car man, just like to surprise people every now and then.

I had no problems with secondaries removed ever at MOT, including the post "all the CATs it left the factory with must still be there" changes - until I had the primary CATs removed.

Then I had to speak to Dave.

Mine were like this moodi (I cannot remember what went where prior though):

Hi Dave

I very briefly had an x-pipe fitted and secondary cats removed. This coincided with an MOT carried out at MB main dealer. I had no issues with emissions so you should be fine as others have said.

Most others on here will probably disagree with what I am about to say as many are happy. BUT.... I pretty quickly regretted having the modifications done and had it all put back to stock after about a month. I know this is very much an each to their own thing, but I didn't particularly like the sound and my car certainly didn't drive as well as it did when the exhaust was stock either. It lost some low down grunt and urgency which I now understand is due to losing some back pressure. To me a waste of money although I recouped some by selling on the whole section of x-pipe that was fabricated. It makes the sound deeper and louder yes, but not pleasant to my ears and also introduced some drone. If you are just looking for an improvement in sound then I would forget x-pipes and just change the back boxes. The E is a fair bit quieter than other M113K's as standard, probably due to it pretending to be an exec car. I have since had C63 back boxes fitted which to my ears are a big improvement giving a harder edged slightly higher pitched sound (sort of more exotic V8 sound) and I have retained all my cats. My only other mod exhaust wise is fitting PLM shorty headers which didn't really do much to sound, but do give performance gains.

I think the x-pipe route is probably a better mod on the CLS rather than E.

CLS55/63 back boxes or later 211 E63 back boxes will give sound improvements too over stock, but C63 ones are probably the best known mod.

Good advice that. There is definitely a reduction in performance

I have long tube headers on my car which do make a difference to the sound (they sound great) and I will do the backboxes at some point.

Not necessarily a loss of performance. The system breathes differently, so you are likely to see an improvement towards the top end of the Rev range, offset by a drop marginally in torque low down. But that’s more so if the decat is replaced with the same size or larger bore pipe than standard, or the X Pipe is larger bore. Most pipework I see fitted is marginally smaller which actually helps when removing cats and opening up the flow capability.

Hi Simon and Nick, Just what i wanted to hear! not only was i concerned about passing Mots, I was also thinking
how the mod would effect power and droning on the motorway, and then returning back to stock system as you did,
cheers Dave
