Electric window switches

I discovered that the front driver's side electric window switch is physically damaged and doesn't rock properly.... and then I also discovered that a rear passenger could drop his window but couldn't get it to rise again... .hmmmmm....

In the absence of a Haynes manual or equivalent being available for the W210 E class, could anyone possibly explain how I approach removing and re-fitting the switches? Most important is the driver's switch next to the gear shifter.

Any advice appreciated :)

i have just had a look at my windows ,seems to have a similar problem drp passenger front window will go down but not up sometimes, fault seems to be very intermittent, why?

OK, I figured out how to get to the switch to remove the plastic sliver that had locked the switch from going up:

1. remove the gear shifter knob by turning the bottom collar to release and it lifted straight off
2. open the storage bin just behind the switch panel enough to get my fingers in directly behind the panel
3. lift at the back and simply pop the panel out of its position, no screws or anything. The plastic trim directly around the auto shifter had to be loosened at the same time

All easy and the switch now moves - but I'd discovered that none of the windows in the car will go automatic - in fact when you press the switches all the way they actually stop - the only way to raise/lower is to press half way for manual.

So, is the 'auto' bit on a separate fuse or something? I have a funny feeling it's not going to be that simple is it....?
