Following on from my airbag thread (thanks all for your input)
My car's transmission has gone into 'emergancy mode' as the manual puts it.
I have the use of 2nd and reverse.
There are no warning lights on the dash and the engine runs fine.
I have tried the 'reset' for the gearbox (Ignition on, foot down, ignition off, remove foot) several times but I am still left with just 2nd and R.

I am guessing an OBD reading is needed, so can anyone recommend a good specialist in the North West ideally manchester/cheshire way.
(As I can only go upto about 30mph without it screaming its balls off).

Also has anyone else had this problem and found an outcome.

TIA

You may have sorted this out now, but there is a specialist in Warrington who get good reviews (although they have gone a bit bonkers posting on the other forum recently):

It's called advertising.

See how long they stick around giving good, free advice for. I bet every post says 'Bring it in for a check'.

Seen it before.

Rory thanks for the advice, only just read it then when I came to update.

The transmission fluid and MAF were changed and codes were reset.
Initially the car was fine, and the upshifts were certainly more defined with new fluid.

However after leaving it overnight it was back in limp home mode.

Further investigation with a friends 3rd party code reader I found that when clearing the fault codes (which were a generic code, as it wasnt STAR) when warm brought the gearbox out of limp home mode, however as soon as its left to cool right down (left for a few hours) it goes back into limp home.

Has anyone seen this before?
TIA

Do you have experience of the above company?

I've used SPR on my previous W210. Very satisfied with the work done and found Steve to be more than helpful. I will go back again with my W211 but will use MB for standard servicing to maintain the FMBSH.

Just as a follow up to this thread for completion.

The issue with the gearbox was traced back to the selector module.
Either through an overzelous valet or someone spilling something over the gear selector the module had packed up.

The selector was not registering Neutral so anytime it was selected it was going into limp home mode.
Once the fault had been cleared you could simply by pass neutral with a quick shift from park to drive, all the other changes worked fine.

The part was quite expensie (circa £300) and it is VIN coded so it required STAR programming.

However the guys at MB Tech (Warrington) did a sterling job, they diagnosed the problem and were not pushy to fit the new parts, saying it would work fine if Neutral was by passed and it was down to me whether the new module should be fitted.

Thanks for everyones input and I will post pics of the car tomorrow.
