Engine oil specification

Hi all!

Does anybody know what the oil code is for E220 CDI engine please?

Is it 208.1 or similar?

Have a look in the handbook - under technical data for the engine - also gives the number of litres for a change.

You don't say how old yours is and there are different grades for the various diesels so best to check against your own manual (e.g. if yours has a diesel particle filter - DPF - like my e280CDI then you need the low ash stuff that costs the same as liquid gold).

If two grades are listed, then usually the .3x is the normal life (9,500 ish miles) and the .5x is the "extended drain" to give 12,500 miles ish.

Service interval for both will vary based on your driving style etc under Assyst.

I forgot to mention (oops!) the car is a W210 99' E220 CDi.
Unfortunately, I can't find the manual!

Help!

Probably 228.5 or 229.1 spec.

In reality any quality synthetic diesel oil will do.

Meeting particular spec is often a bit of a swizz as it is just down to the manufacturer applying for and being granted approval on a product. It doesn't mean that product is better than another one that isn't approved.

An oil manufacturer I use was one of the first independant producers to be granted VW505.1 for use in PD engines.
This took two years due to VW just not replying to their letters, probably due to tie ins with a tame producer, also the approved oil is their semi synthetic version, whereas their full synth version isn't approved.
Does this make the semi thynth version better than the full synth. Of course not.

Hmm im just wondering since I can get 20L of Mobil 1 0w-40 for £95, or
Mobil XM 1300 20L for £39

That might be a bit thin for the UK, unless you live near Aberdeen :)
