Hello All,

I have a 1991 H reg 230TE Merc which is in need of an overhaul as apparently the second spark plug is not firing due to low compression - and it is guzzling oil every three weeks....

I am in Merseyside, and have not yet been able to find anyone who is willing to undertake this work. I have been quoted £300 to remove and replace the engine, and have sourced a replacement engine for approx £300. Can someone advise if this is the way to proceed, and what I should realistically expect to pay for this kind of work ?

Cheers

Try Key engines Ltd, Located on Brookfield Drive, Aintree (Facing the Jacobs Factory) I can recommend these guys, the done a quality job on my tired Pontiac Motor...:rock:BTW My Motor cost £850 to have rebuilt considering the parts for the rebuild were only available from uncle Sam and had to be imported it wasn't bad... Also the engine & gearbox had to be dropped on the sub-frame to remove it from the car... It took a day to remove it.... But if you decide to go with another motor, I recommend C&D Autos Located on The Bremrose Industrial est. Hanson Road, (Off Brookfield Drive). I would be happy to supply you their number. The company I mentiond specialize in engine swaps, and work to a very high standard and pride themselves in retuning your car to you in a short space of time and have a fully insured pick-up and drop off service... They have worked on all three of may cars (Pontiac Trans Sport, BMW 525, C180 w202) and my family are using them. And I must point out that I have no financial interest in either company...

Yes I know the one! I used to Live in Bootle on St. James Drive and that place was known as Boomerang motors?

Not because the cars were always coming back ? :D

As you have said the cost of engine remove/replacement is as much as the purchase price of other engine so tread carefully! You really need to know the provenance of the other engine--whats the mileage on it ---can you hear it running---- will you get all the ancillaries with it like the ECU and the ezl ignition module. You really need some professional advice from an honest specialist like Ian as suggested. If the rest of the cars in good nick an engine recon (with a warranty) might be worth considering??

key engines are great. nice chap too, but he will not do engine swaps only fix or rebuild yours.
h claims too many people have bought duff engines and are trying to blame him if the swaps do not work.

Thanks for the advice chaps, I will ring around, and see what they say about rebuilding mine. It seems such a shame to condemn the car to the scrap yard in the sky ... I really enjoyed driving it, and it was so useful too.

Does anyone have any rough ideas what a rebuild should cost ( ball park figures) ?

Yes, I know, that's why I mentioned C&D Autos? They took my engine out, it was taken to Key, then refitted by C&D Autos... It worked out for the best and I have drove the Pontiac everyday for nearly a year and it has never missed a beat:D. I trust both companies to do the work on my cars, but I can only speak from personal experience.

I'd swop the engine for one from a breaker. IMHO the economics of a rebuild just don't add up on a car of that age

Thanks chaps for all your advice.... I am afraid the car is going to the Great Mercedes Garage in the sky.

The sums don't add up to pay for the rebuild, and the bodywork isn't that fab, if it was, I would have had the work done in a heart beat as I love this car, I am gutted ! Oh well, best go any buy my save away bus ticket for work ...

BTW Anyone want a non-runner ??
