CLK 320 (W209)
Hi There,

I'm hoping this is the right/best section for this type of question or whether it should go in 'general' or 'engine'....

The car i'm having this issue with is a CLK 320 Petrol 2002 (W209).

It's happened twice to me now, i'd be on an average drive of around 30/45 minutes pull up and as i've put it into Park about to leave the car the malfunction menu pops up and says 'ESP Defective, Visit Workshop' & 'BAS Defective, Visit Workshop". I'd turn the engine off, remove the key then restart and both malfunctions have cleared themselves.

So firstly, what is BAS? I understand ESP is traction control. With winter on it's way i'd especially like the traction control to be working.

Secondly, is this likely to be a mechanical or electrical fault and is it expensive to repair or is there a common fault/quick fix for the issue?

Anyone else had or seen similar issues?

Any replies would be greatly appreciated!

James.

Hi,
A possible quick fix for this fault is to replace the brake light switch, less than a tenner IIRC correctly, try this first and foremost.

BAS is Brake Assist System. It boosts the brake force in an emergency. As above, change the brake light switch first...

I had this problem with my old W210. Turned out the front wheels needed to be aligned while the steering was dead center. This fixed it once and for all.

Apparently, there is an encoder built into the steering which checks the consistency of wheel rotation against steering position. If either the wheels are out of alignment or the steering out of 'true' centre, a fault condition is raised.

I used to 'lose' ABS, BAS, ESP all in one go. Instrument panel would lit up like a Xmas tree. It was easily fixed.

By the way, the dealer's suggestion was to change the brake light switch at a cost of ninety odd quid ....... Go figure.

If that doesn't fix it, then there maybe a faulty speed sensor on one of the wheels?

I've had exactly the same happen twice over the past two months but after switching off and getting back into my CLK430 hours later it behaves again!

E240 W210 1999...
I had exactly the same fault at begining but then it just contiously keeps warning me ASR and BAS dysfunction ... u have to change the brake light switch found just behind the brake pedal ...
BAS Brake Assist System ( activated in emergency braking )
